Virgin Media Discussion Thread

You need to change the protocol to TCP and change the DMZ back to 0.

Having the protocol as "both" stops the monitor from working but currently it's bypassing the port forwarding because the DMZ host (your pc) is accessible regardless.

I think this should sort it.

It's just the DMZ affecting things.

Certain rules require being setup as "both"... whether it's TCP/UDP is irrelevant.

ICMP traffic is not the same as TCP/UDP traffic.

crink yes it proabably would stop working if i turned the comp off and yes its strange that it works with fw turned off in windows, it baffles me too i just duno why its like that.

Spoon, ta i will try that.

We've figured it out buddy - get rid of DMZ - that's leaving you completely open to attack & why the packets are being forwarded to your PC.

DMZ = bypass of router's firewall to the specified IP

Disabling win 7 firewall, combined with DMZ enabled means you are completely open to the net, with no firewalls at all.

DMZ is something that should only be used briefly for testing, or if you have a server acting as a firewall or similar...

Because your pc is set as the DMZ host, all traffic is being passed to it which is why it doesn't work with the windows firewall on because that's blocking the ping request from thinkbroadband, disabling the windows firewall will make it work as the PC is now responding to ping requests.

Specifically setting any port forwarding to BOTH on the superhub will break the thinkbroadband monitor, this was a problem I faced when I first set up mine. If you need both, then you have to set up a TCP rule and a UDP rule for the same port.

This is/was a "quirk" of the superhub.

Yes I am aware TCP/UDP is not ICMP, but thanks.

Ok turned on fw turned off port forwarding but instead trying upnp (temporarily) to see if it was the port forwarding issue. Deselected dmz respond to ping in the superhub tho why would TB tell you to do it in the first place if it worked with it deticked? Im gona see if the monitor works tho im doubtful as im sure i did all this before a few months ago when it wasnt working and i tried all this but i will do it again for testing and replying here my findings.

Well thats what its been like for months

I only used 2 instead of 0 for the last day or two to see if it would work.

Ok so its now

DMZ to 0 and ticked tho i think crink would say untick it :p

FW on for windows

Upnp on for testing to see if port forwarding (both) was a problem. Tho i dont like using upnp due to the unsafe nature of it.

So for the first time on Saturday, My internet completely dropped and kept coming up with Access Denied in Router.

I phoned Virgin up on mobile on a free-phone number I found (0333 000 3101) and followed through the menus.

Colin, one of the tech's picked up.. I instantly say the error message im getting and he instantly threw the textbook out the window and talked to me properly as he went through the systems to have a look at what was going on.

Apparently the fault had already been reported and an engineer had diagnosed it to the the cabinet on the street had been flooded (big rainstorms :( ). He then went on to say the scheduled completion date was the 19th.. 5 days away. And then he decided to throw that out the window too, put me on hold for 5 mins, till coming back and saying that the nearest replacement part was 100miles away but hes managed to convince an engineer to go get it, and come and replace it. Baring in mind it was already 18:00 at this point, but he insisted that the latest it should be fixed would be 01:00am.

I didn't hold much hope for that completion time but since he was such a decent fella I wasn't going to bother complaining and as I was about to hang up, he threw out a goodwill offer and decided to knock £15 off my next bill. #Winning.

I thanked him and hung up the phone, expected the internet to be back up the next day some time.

But, sure enough, 23:00 that evening, a virgin media van and man is at the end of my road, with a bucket, scooping out the water, and then replacing the part! 23:55, and its back up and running and 100mb.

Brilliant service.

The port forwarding set to both will stop the TBB from working, just set the torrent port forward to TCP and/or UDP based on requirements and don't use upnp :)

I ran the monitor with more than a dozen rules set to "both".

ICMP traffic (ping)... is completely seperate from port redirection, it doesn't use a "port".

SkeeterUK... all you need to do is reset the DMZ (port forwarding doesn't work in combination with DMZ, anyway) & enable the "respond to ping on wan port" check box.

You must reset the DMZ, otherwise it'll continue to push everything to your PC... as well as allowing anyone with a random port scanner to access your network easily.

DMZ was on 192.168.0.0 for months and the monitor didn't work so its not just that and yes the respond to ping thing was ticked as well. ;)

Ok now im testing

Upnp off
Port forwarding for utorrent to tcp and a seperate one for utp.
windows fw on
dmz using 0 and ticked

So if this works it probably was the utorrent using a single port forward using "both" instead of 2 separate entries. Which would confirm spoons theory.

Edit - So far so good i see something on the monitor and its not red :D So im probably gona guess that it was the BOTH thing in the port forwarding so a big thanks to Spoon for the answer to the trouble. ;) Thanks crink for trying to help throughout all of this. :)

Thanks for pointing this out, again.
