Its an excellent decision to get rid of Carroll.

Its not being done in the right way mind, but it is the right thing to do, however it is done.

One potential outside reason is, why I said Utd are going for Baines, when you have a 25 man squad but can only have 17 non home grown, it is very important to have the other 8 slots filled, even more so when you're playing in Europe as well as two domestic cups and the league.

I can't see MU having any problem whatsoever with finding the 8 players to make up the numbers (note the below aren't in any particular order and not suggesting all would necessarily be good enough for the 25 man squad, also some qualify as young players anyway I think so would replace Giggs/Scholes when they are no longer selected):

Rio
Evans
Carrick
Scholes
Giggs
Rooney
Smalling
Cleverley
Jones
Rafael
Fabio
Wellbeck
Macheda
etc

Your point is correct -but Fabio is now at QPR on loan, and if anything is to be believed Macheda is going to follow (edit - out the door, not ot QPR) :)

At least Vidic is back on the road to recovery

You misread the point COMPLETELY.

It's not HOW MANY players you have but HOW GOOD they are.

Fabio and Rafael aren't very good defenders, Wellbeck and Macheda aren't good strikers, Rio is one back injury recurrence from having his career be over, Scholes and Giggs are a broken hip away from retiring(they're old see).

The fact is that you can't fit Fabio in the squad which is why he's been shipped out. He didn't count in the squad last year, he does this year and there isn't space in the squad for the 25. its about having the best 8 homegrown players you can, so you can then get the best 17 foreign players you can basically. All teams are bringing in youngsters at ever increasing wages to try and not screw themselves in the future.

So yes, I see that list as a few people who should be there, and a bunch of filler players that you have little choice but to stick with to fill out a big squad needed for a 4 competition club.

You replace one of your fullbacks with another homegrown player who is better, and you've increased the quality of the squad WITHOUT costing one of your 17 squad places you can use for the best players you can find.

There isn't a team in this country that can't fill out the 8 homegrown places, you could have kept Smith and let him play in the carling cup, but you want the best player you can get which is why when you have to have 8 homegrown players to have a decent sized squad, and due to the nature of homegrown players these will be largely english, or a foreign player who came here young enough, very high quality players in either category are in VERY short supply, high demand and therefore will cost a bomb.

For instance, what if you buy Baines, meaning you can sell Macheda and buy ANY striker in the world you want, you free up a homegrown slot for someone better and can then buy the best striker you can find.

lol DM, what was it 1 maybe 2 months ago you said Scholes' age had nothing to do with his ability

Wow, that was unnecessarily rude.

Nearly every single post he makes is, be it about whatever club.

It's the main issue I take with the posts, often there is some useful information or something interesting within it but it's either totally rude or a post stating that his opinion is fact, it's quite grating and saddening that he has to be so rude to try and get his point across.

ledley king has retired. i feel for the bloke as due to his condition, we never saw his full ability. however, he has gone into a coaching role. this is good news.

I really would like to know what experience DM has in the world of football to make such sweeping statements about players being 'unbelievably bad' yadda yadda yadda. A one line run and gun stat is usually the foundation of a tirade of nonsense about any player he chooses. A sophisticated Nickg no less.

If there is one thing I have learned in life, nobody bother if you speak your mind. Sometimes it's how it's delivered that is the issue

Less than 2 hours there was less than 20 minutes between those two links :o
I was going by the transfer news tickers and clockwatches, times on the stories are the latest edits

Anyone know anything about this Oscar lad then? What position does he play in?
some good detailed analysis of him here: http://brazil.worldcupblog.org/world-cup-2010/the-playmakers-oscar.html

worth £25M at this point? probably not, but Ganso and Moura are also alleged to have asking prices of £30M+. It seems like South American clubs have a bit more wealth and negotiating power than previous years so European clubs are going to be forced to gamble more if they want to sign these types of promising young players.

What's Neymar's transfer fee going to be when he finally moves? £40M-£50M? more?

£25mil for Oscar looks risky and with Mata and Hazard we already have awesome number 10s.

Saying that, he could be awesome and it's not my money so sweeet. :p
