So, I'm doing a major upgrade soon, and I'm settled on socket 2011, however I'm not entirely sure of what else I'm getting.

I'm leaning towards a Gigabyte GA-X79-UD5 motherboard, as it seems to be a good price with good features. What are people's thoughts on this board?

I'm pretty much settled on getting a 3930K at the moment, though I might change my mind if they bring out an octocore or new hex core.

The features on the UD5 seem pretty good, but I feel like I might be missing something. Most other boards that I have looked at though have had major downsides, like one board will have 12 SATA ports but then only have 4 DIMM slots.

8 DIMM slots are a must for me, I'm going for 32GB RAM for now but I will definitely be doubling up to 64GB in the future, I use various memory intensive applications for 3D modelling, as well as photoshop and various other things that I like to have running at the same time (I also like to multi-task a lot, I'm on 8GB at the moment and it's just not enough), so it seems like the UD5 is the sensible choice for me right now, but I can't shake the feeling that there's something I'm missing.

I'll be playing games too, I'll be getting 2x 7950s (unless something better comes out, or 7970s drop to that price point when I do buy).

I've got my monitors already, I upgraded them early, got my OS already too.

It's just the motherboard, CPU, RAM and graphics cards that I'll be getting.

I haven't actually got a fixed budget, I'll spend a bit more if I can justify it or it's worth it in some way. :)

7 Ultimate, 64bit of course.

I can't do with a UD3 as it only has 4 RAM slots, and I'm getting 7950s for graphics cards.

My questions and thoughts revolve more around what board to get (that has 8 RAM slots) and whether the UD5 is a good board.

Get one with 8 RAM slots, the UD5 is good, wait till someone with more experiance than me comes online :)

You can get 32gb on the UD3 but yeah you want 64gb eventually although by the time the 4x8gb kits are affordable at really super fast timings and speeds you might be on the next socket!

You can get an octocore Xeon but it'll cost a lot and you'll not be able to overclock. If you want 8 cores and the ability to overclock then you'll have to wait for Ivy-E.

The 3930K is a brilliant chip, fun to overclock.

Well having one i of course recommend the msg gd65 8d been totally trouble free for me. Seems to be on par with features for the price range.

What is your budget and are you overclocking it is the main question.

Also why do you need 64gb of ram is also another one???

What PSU do you own already?

An 850w modular coolermaster PSU.

32GB is just a short term compromise really, I always wanted to go for 64GB but it won't be necessary straight away.

Yeah I've had a look at some Xeons and I'm not happy to pay that kind of money. :p

I'm really looking forward to getting a 3930K, I've been on a Q6600 for about 4-5 years now, it's running great but I definitely need something better.

I've checked it out and seems pretty good, I can't decide between it and a UD5. :P

I will definitely be overclocking, I don't have a fixed budget currently, and I like lots of RAM. I've been running 8GB of RAM since 2GB was considered a lot. I multi task a lot, use a lot of applications that have heavy RAM use and I have 3 monitors which indirectly pushes RAM usage up.

I was going to go for 64GB straight away, but I won't be needing it straight away so I might as well leave it until later in the year/early 2013.

RIVE simple answer best X79 board for clocking and I doubt you wll be clocking

64gb of RAM unless you have a very strong IMC.

If you go for 32gb get G.SKILL 2133mhz 32gb Ripjawz Hynic IC work great with this board i have a 32gb kit dont use it much though but it does work well and at good timings 9-11-10-28, With my CPU I can run that kit 2333mhz + but everyones mileage will differ.

You've confused me here, I'm not sure what you mean.

They're a bit overly expensive, I've been looking at 32GB sets for the £180 mark like this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-129-GL&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=813.

64 GB of ram puts a big strain on the memory controller on the CPU and limits overclock. 8gb Chips in general are very problematic unless you have a strong IMC and a board that is very compatible when setting em up or you are good with memory timings not primarys the rest.

64gb will work at stock settings but if you want a decent overclock I would not bank on it. Its look of the draw with CPU IMC.

That kit should work ok at stock settings yes.

What does IMC mean?

I've heard over the years that people say filling all the RAM slots puts a big demand on memory controllers and limits overclocking, but I've never had any issues with it myself, I tend to always have all RAM slots full.

I managed to overclock my current Q6600 to 4Ghz and have it stable too with full RAM slots, obviously I have no idea about the latest stuff as I'm pretty far behind when it comes to boards and CPUs.

Can you run the RAM at a different ratio on X79?

Hi Spoffle - see sig below for my 64GB setup. Overclocked to 4.2 with just raised multiplier, vcore not touched. I bought 4x 16GB kits of http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-347-CS

Hello Gareth, looks good! Have you tried overclocking it higher, or is 4.2Ghz enough for you at the moment?
