Probably wrong thread to ask... Anyone else NOT have a phone?

Got rid of mine a long time ago.

The idea of being "connected" / "Available" all day, every day is just hell.

Smartphones only made it "worse" as then you had emails/social feeds to contend with too. I appreciate this is all "voluntary" but it is often "expected".

I personally found them to be an expense I could not justify.

I am now connected at home and disconnected when away from home which works perfectly.

Luckily, I work from home which may have something to do with it.

I appreciate what I am saying is probably heresy to some but no offence intended.

Obviously, some people NEED their phones which is understandable, just wondered if there were others like myself?

Are you talking about smartphones or do you not have a phone at all? Not even a Nokia 3310 or something?

If not, then you should... what about emergencies, contacting people about various things, etc.

I can understand people not being able to justify the cost of a smartphone, but to not have a mobile phone at all... madness!

As above I'd advise at least having one to contact emergency services etc. It could save yours/somebody else's life.

I have a HTC Dream in a drawer somewhere. Never use it though. Do not even know where the charger is if I wanted to.

If going away with the family, the Mrs will have her phone should anything happen. Maybe that makes me a hypocrite perhaps? I do not use it though, it is her phone.

I do use Skype a LOT when at home to IM/Group chat with friends.

It is the point of having carry it around which I did not like too which I know may sound odd.

Agree on the being able to call emergency services. You will only kick yourself when the situation arises and you don't have one.

Nothing is "expected".

If your friends expect you to reply that very instant as opposed to when you have time then you need new friends or at the very least, the existing ones need a right slap.

I reply to messages and take my go on games etc when I have a moment. With phones these days it takes seconds anyway but when I am genuinely busy people know this because they too are busy from time to time.

I think you're blowing the situation out of proportion though because you have a personal issue with being contactable at a moment's notice. That's not a bad thing, Magick on this forum has issues with actual aliens, others hate human immigrants (lol).... But to say:

Is a bit weird. Nobody leads a lifestyle that makes having a phone "hell" unless there are deeper underlying issues at play.

I have two phones currently, neither of which make it much further than my desk, except for the rare occassion that I am travelling and am required to be 'contactable'.. otherwise, sodd 'em

I couldn't imagine not having a phone (I'm disabled, so having one in the car when out and about is handy), however, its only a Nokia 2730, which i've had for years. Only really use to text with and the odd phone call. As much as i'd like an iphone 5 (you can pretty much do anything on them, apps for everything, even banking / shopping on the move!) I don't think i can justify the cost. I'm never far from a landline if i need to make calls.

its nice to switch it off occasionally and have a weekend of peace!

Not at all.

There are no underlying issues, I just do not like having a mobile :)

I have the same amount of "connectivity" at home, I do not want it in my pocket.

I resisted for a long time but gave in and got a mobile in 2000. Now I couldn't live without it - my budget smartphone is sometimes the only bribe that will get my young son (just under 2) to eat his dinner :D

I'd love not to have a phone, id love not to have the internet and modern technology, maybe its rose tinted glasses but in my eyes things seemed better back then in the 80's early 90's without the advanced technology we have...

Saying all that, Id find it hard to cope without a smartphone and the internet in general :(

I discovered an interesting thing about my smartphone that stops me being disturbed when i dont want to be, i can switch it off, genius.

This, it's completely optional. You don't need to reply or be contactable constantly. You could put your phone on silent so you don't get notifications and then check when you want. Entirely optional.

Ah haha hahahaha is this real or are you joking?

Maybe the problem is ultra-popularity!

I was thinking the other day how I would like a world without smartphones, then yesterday I left my phone on my table, it took me all of 2 steps outside of my house to notice it wasnt there while I tired to check my train times. So yeah I really couldnt live without it.
