*** The Official Google Nexus 7 Thread ***

Whats this screen fault people mention? Does it "click" when in use or something?
If you examine the thing, left side on, and peer at it really hard in good light there is a 2cm area where the screen cover is raised by a tiny fraction of a mm on mine. And I mean tiny. When I press the screen there it flexes down flush.

On a scale of one to headache this is a paracetamol-free zone. :-)

Without this thread I would never have noticed it, but for all I know there are some 7s with illegal immigrants stowing away inside, making the issue much more pronounced. And -- to be serious -- there are bound to be people who have genuine issues. With a big launch like this it'd be impossible not to, and with supplies limited for a while getting a prompt replacement could be problematic.

Ooooh, stop being so reasonable!

I reckon you should bang your head on a wall for a bit then go down to your store still covered in blood DEMAND your money back.

I certainly hope you didn't even turn it on to see if it, you know, actually works! Never turn ANYTHING on until you've made sure every fixture and fitting is perfectly in line and you've applied pressure to every single sq mm of the device to make sure there's no tiny creaks.

Just saw on HUKD

Tesco Direct now has stock.

Apparently new accounts can use the use code TDX-KPHM to make it £189 if you have it delivered to a store.

Finally, they've dispatched it and given me a tracking number. But I'm away from home till the weekend. How irritating.

They also sent me the global email that everyone else got a few days ago, shortly after the email saying it was dispatched. Google are a total shambles when it comes to retail. I hope that they fire whoever was responsible for making it all run smoothly.

Should get mine today. RM say its at my local depot, Blackheath.

I am right in saying when I open it I have 7 days to check and I can return if necessary under DSR.. I ordered from the big purple retailer.

Can't seem to get the Google Now hotword to work. You should be able to say "Google" to start searching but it won't. The option is also missing from Settings (I think it's Menu -> Settings -> Voice -> Enable Hotword, not got the tablet with me)

Form factor is interesting. I thought it felt quite small last night. Having picked up my GS2 this morning though I have had a quick rethink.

The 7 is immensely portable. For me it is the right size for books, internet, home hi-fi remote control and gaming. It falls down on movie streaming because the film on fills half the screen.

I really enjoyed fiddling with it last night (after stoke1863 sorted me out with BSplayer). Jelly bean really excelled at web browsing (so much so that I am gutted when I have to switch browsers for flash). Little things like enlarging areas with multiple links so fat fingers don't spam the wrong link really help. For once an android web browser can deal with typing in these forums without me typing off screen or being unable to move the cursor!

There are foibles. Mine creaks and crackles (play store order) and has a mild case of the screen issue. There is some weird slowdown every now and again in chrome and when newly downloaded apps are placed on the home screen which jars you out of the super slick experience; no flash is beyond dumb then again this is half the price of the tablets I was looking at and comes with the Google experience which absolutely win me over .

Coming from a Touchpad with CM9 I am satisfied this was the right choice. I would give this to the other half and buy a nexus 10 in a heartbeat too.

Trying to talk my mother into buying one of these at the end of the month as a replacement for her old iPad

It depends on your mother's tech level and age, but the iPad has an awful lot to offer for people who like/need a very simple experience and aren't bothered about portability. For those with weak eyesight the large screen also allows an impressive degree of zooming before you lose functionality.

It's just that for me I find myself reaching for the N7 almost every time now. At first I still preferred browsing on the iPad in portrait mode, but now I hold the N7 in landscape mode and use my thumbs to drive it. You lose screen real estate, but the light weight and hand-friendly form factor kind of win you over before you realise it.

Of course it's also important to remember that with any new bit of kit there is a honeymoon period (for most of us ;-) ) where we automatically want to justify our purchases. Only time will tell if that wears off, but I've heard similar anecdotes from people who got theirs at the launch and are still happy.

Of course really sensible people will wait for Apple's answer, which will undoubtedly be a nice bit of kit. By then though I think Android's user base should have worked out how to do all sorts of things with the N7, making it the fully flexible device we (here) really want. And of course Apple aren't going to be offering anything for £160.
