Hey everyone

I was wondering if Windows 8 brings anything to PC Gamers and will you be making the transition from windows 7?

Lower overheads could help a little. Other than that I dont know.

The Metro UI could do really well, at least for home users, with the right apps. I liked the Win8 preview and will be upgrading on release. Hopefully we could see a Steam app, new apperised (technical term) WoW launcher, and Netflix lol.

nope, windows 7 appealed to me ages ago windows 8 does not, it looks more like a tablet OS

Same feeling here. Mate at work has loaded it onto his tablet and dont get me wrong, it looks smooth as anything on it. But for a desktop OS, maybe not.

I know a few people have it installed as a desktop OS, and is apparently very good, but I wont be using it. :)

You'll get lots of people installing windows 8 then installing tweaks and mods to make it look like windows 7

Always happens ;)

Been trying the previews for a few months and am very happy with it, it's fast (boots ridiculously quickly from SSD), stable and I never bother with any of the metro tile stuff.
I'd pick it up for a low enough price but there doesn't really seem to be much reason to upgrade from 7, from Vista maybe.

Its not worth buying at all far from it does not even include native Bluray/DVD playback any longer to save on licensing fees for MS you have to buy a 3rd part codec

1: MS are forcing indie devs to use it by telling them they can create a game which will work on PC/WP7/XBLA/MS Surface Tablets using Xbox LIVE For Windows otherwise they have to use GFWL on Windows 7 only. Few indie devs will work on it for sure as GFWL only would limit the sales.

2: MS App store is obviously DRM heavy as the entire Windows 8 OS uses your Gamertag as its logon account now. MS are trying to build a Steam like store here to corner the market.

3: MS are trying to muscle their way into the indie + casual scene by building an OS around casual game non hardcore gamers & offering bribes to those who want to take the money & make it Windows 8 exclusive.

4: Xbox LIVE For Windows 8 is now identical on all 4 supported platforms as a further incentive to force 360 developers to support Windows 8 only they do not need to do anything to make it run on PC's (GFWL needed 5 API calls to work). Publishers will like that part it will minimise porting costs a lot if you can make your 360 Xbox LIVE work that's it no need to do anything on the other ports now!

I think it will fail miserably for hardcore gamers they will have no interest whatsoever but the casual gaming market is massive so perhaps it will find some audience as Windows 7 is being discontinued on 25th October (stock up now!!).

MS are so keen to make this work its only £14.99 to upgrade a vendor OS if your buying a new device with it.

Windows 8 will bring more functionality as mentioned above, how important that is depends on the individual gamer. I for one still use XP on my gaming system and Windows 7 on an non-gaming system. I have not had a single reason as yet to move on from XP, every game I'm interested in works just fine on XP. But, the time will come at some point to upgrade for whatever reason and I'm not sure I like the direction Windows 8 is heading.

Ram limitations in XP?

I'm guessing it will bring something to us vista users :) Looking forward to upgrading, might buy some new PC bits for the occasion given the £15 upgrade cost!

I don't understand how anyone can STILL be using XP. It's incompatible with most new releases, doesn't let you use much RAM, looks horrible, and is riddled with security flaws.

Windows 8, aside from metro, also brings faster boot and shut down times, improvements to task manager and file copying interfaces (you can pause/unpause etc), and better multimonitor support. That's all I can think of off the top of my head but I'm sure there's more. Not a huge improvement but worth it if it's cheap, especially as you can prety much ignore metro and just use the standard desktop the whole time.

I'll probably be upgrading. I'm currently using a HDD and I've been wanting to upgrade to a SSD for a while. Given I can get windows 8 very cheaply with a student deal then it seems a good time to do it, and I can use my current HDD as a backup drive (I already have a 2nd one for data).
