Does windows 8 bring anything to PC Gamers?

Windows 8 will bring more functionality as mentioned above, how important that is depends on the individual gamer. I for one still use XP on my gaming system and Windows 7 on an non-gaming system. I have not had a single reason as yet to move on from XP, every game I'm interested in works just fine on XP. But, the time will come at some point to upgrade for whatever reason and I'm not sure I like the direction Windows 8 is heading.

DX10 and DX11 don't work in XP, unless you're running a DX9 GPU that would be enough reason to upgrade for me. :)

What does W8 look like if you're not using the Metro interface? Does it still have a normal looking desktop?

I don't understand how anyone can STILL be using XP. It's incompatible with most new releases, doesn't let you use much RAM, looks horrible, and is riddled with security flaws.

Now re-read my post, and maybe you will start to understand.

It is my gaming system (console if you like) and thats it. All other work/internet stuff is done on another system, this system is placed in a games room and is used just for that. So lets stop this nonsense. As stated the games (I) play work just fine, and as said above when the time comes to upgraded I don't like the direction Windows 8 is heading.

Doesn't it use 20% less resources than windows 7?

5-10 years ago this would have been a massive appeal factor for gamers, but does it really matter now that even a fairly modest gaming PC is sporting quad-core CPUs with masses of RAM and an SSD?

I secretly wish Windows XP was still updated, I thought XP was fine for most things.

Just use media center for other stuff.

As far as the desktop goes, it's just a better looking windows 7 minus the start button and with a ribbon interface thrown in. There's no major change of style like there was in 98 > xp or xp > vista.

You'll get lots of people installing windows 8 then installing tweaks and mods to make it look like windows 7

Always happens

I'm sure that, compared to the amount of people who will be purchasing windows 8, it's not lots at all. Even if people do, so what? it'll look like windows 7 and still be faster and come with all the other improvements windows 8 brings.

It's a ribbon UI - You can set it to stay minimised just like you can in office 2007/2010. When minimised, explorer windows will look like the control panel window in that screen shot, with context sensitive headers appearing in the title bar.

Bleh. We use XP at work, it's a dog. There are some very bizarre interface decisions/designs that you don't really pick up on until you're used to Windows 7.

No need to be rude.

I can understand that, if you only play old games, then XP will do fine. However I am confident I speak for the vast majority of PC games when I say that one of the chief benefits of using a PC is that you get up to date tech, high res and nice graphics. Read: DX10/11.

In fact, it's surely a better way of doing it to have a modern PC for gaming, and use an old machine for work/internet given that'll be less demanding.

Fair enough if you are in a minority who only plays old games, but you can't blame me for being surprised. You'd be better off just using an actual console, then you can at least play new releases.

My intention is not to be rude:

SR3, Alan wake (both), Batman AA, Skyrim, FSX, DoW, Deadspace, Dirt ... . All play very well, and look good. Have a look at the titles people are buying to play from steam, Amazon and so on, I'm not in a minority. You speak like I don't know whats out there tech wise, or what Windows 7 has to offer in general, that is not the case. I'm heading towards 50 and consider myself a mature gamer, I don't get into the must buy new releases because their new and I must play them now mentality, like many other gamers on this forum, when the system no longer does the job it will be replaced. And why I seemed rude when I replied was just a case of mild irritation, I stated I had a windows 7 system, don't you think I would have put it on my gaming system if I felt it was required; It just seemed like you where being an opportunist and slacking of XP because that's the thing to do. But, if you found my response rude then all I can do Is offer you an apology.

If you have to hide the ribbon UI to make it look good, then it doesn't work.

I will get it once it's been out for a while, but given that I've literally only seen those screenshots, then I'm not overly excited.

You are, in fact. As you mentioned steam, the last steam survey said only 15% of users are on windows xp/xp64. Windows 7 has an overwhelming majority of 69% of steam users.
