NAS Advice

Hi

I have been meaning to setup a NAS at home for some time now, and having holidays coming up now seems like a good time. It will mainly be used as a backup solution, as well as streaming music/limited films to devices in the house. It is not going to be used intensively.

It needs to be on a budget, max of £150

1TB is plenty.

I have both Macs and PCs in the house.

I have been looking at the following three:

Iomega Cloud Edition 34764

Buffalo LS-V LinkStation Pro

WD My Book Live Personal Cloud Storage

I would really appreciate any advice or alternative suggestions?

regarding the hard drive for GB to Pounds, I would get the http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-244-SE&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=1955 and leave 1TB alone better value for money, and If you have a old machine lying around stick it in there and run 1: Freenas or look frther in here http://alternativeto.net/software/freenas/.

Thanks for your reply. I unfortunately don't have an old machine lying around, or else the FreeNAS route would be the way to go.

Does anyone have any recommendations, bearing in mind my budget?

with your change from your hard drive could you do a search locally on the ebay within 25 miles etc for a used pc 2 gh cpu etc working off course with at least 2gb memory etc should get one operating system free, inbetween 30 to 50 pounds etc

IF possible could there be a pc shop which does repairs and upgrades etc that would possibly have a used pc for you for a small sum off cash in hand etc :-)

some thoughts etc, hope you have success adam keep us upto date on your progress on which your road you went down to get it sorted :-)

I use Macs and my DNS-320 has an options for Time Machine backups, though I have a Time Capsule for my hardware. The DNS-320 is really a file store. These are the built in applications;

well that looks very good unit, may consider getting one myself

just did a search on reviews for that product and found a lot off people seam to hate the poor transfer speeds off the unit, I am Out :-)

Is there no room at all to stretch the budget?

I would get a Synology DS112j personally then stick a hard drive in. Might be able to pick a tidy HD up in the mm and bring it in on budget!
