Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I'll give it until Monday morning to settle. I'm just getting hit with more and more hiccups these days. I used to recommend virgin on the fact I very rarely had any issues at all. Maybe a weeks downtime in the 8 years I had been with them before moving house.

If its no good by Sunday mate then just call up and try too book a tech for Monday to at least try a new hub. The firmware should be a massive improvement over R30 so it will likely just be a hiccup if the issue persists

then what happens? speeds get halved?

No... Traffic shaping is different to throttling. You could have downloaded nothing all week and still get traffic shaped as soon as you start downloading any sort of file sharing data.

WOW used to suffer traffic shaping when blizzard increased the packet sizes and it made the game unplayable with some people suffering latency in excess of 3000ms just because VM seen it as file sharing data.

I'm not sure what happens when it is low priority apart from slow speeds. It could be that some packets are dumped and have to be resent or redownloaded which is how i think it works or it could be something else.

But the bottom line is that a 100Mb connection could see speeds of as little as 1MB/s due to traffic shaping however I don't think it is that excessive

Thanks all, that's clear as crystal, especially horrorwood - those limits are surprisingly generous. I'm pleasantly surprised

Just got my new R36FW on the 50mb package. All looking good so far. Interface is nice. Its faster to navigate around the router control panel by a long shot. For me anyway.

I'm still awaiting on leaving Virgin and subscribing to BT Infinity. Virgin is a pain in the backside; their service is barely managed correctly let alone given out correctly. Especially in over subscribed areas. Their TV ads are also bias too; they don't offer the best. I would rank it good if they had a drastic change in equipment.

I had a 2-day outage on Virgin a couple of months ago, and was determined to leave. But for several months before that it was 100% reliable, and has been since. And now I see BT have problems as well. I'm not inclined to switch now. BT could be worse, or if not worse, then no better. In which case no reason to change. My free upgrade to 60Mb is going very well.

my bf is surfing porn he would kill me
ill wait :p

Derp.

Doubled speeds come when your area has been upgraded. More often than not, you can call Virgin up and ask them for it early. However, any special deals or discounts may be removed if you ask for it early. Happened to me, but they credited my account for the discounted amount, so worked out the same anyway.

Well I was on 50/5 and phoned up today to complain and see if I could get free doublespeed to 100 today as the website now tells me I'm due the upgrade in July 2013.

I spoke to a Gaurav Sharma who at first said it would not be possible without additional cost. Here's how it panned out:

Part 1: He said since I have only a BB line and no other service that I'd have to add a phone line whether I use it or not which would give me 100Mb+Phone @ £41 a month because my 50Mb line now already has a £10 discount applied since on its own it is a £47.25 a month service. To do the £41 a month option would require an installation charge of £49, I said no to this at which point he said he could half the installation cost...

Alternatively I could just upgrade to 100Mb for £47.25 a month...

Part 2: I stressed that this was not correct because I am already in a 100Mb enabled area so the upgrade should not cost me anything given that the upgrade will be free anyway. He said that this is only what the computer allows so I said that BT are offering up to 76Mb in my area right now and that I'd be making calls next week.

Part 3: He put me on hold and came back saying that the system is now showing a few options, he'd somehow managed to wrangle the system and allow me to keep the £10 discount and upgrade me to 100Mb with no requirement for a phone line.

I said yes to this at which point the line cut dead...my landline is on a Vonage service hence the cut out :p I quickly checked the superhub and it had rebooted, logged into it and noticed the 100Mb connection status. Seems he'd done it!

I then got acall on my mobile, it was Gaurav Sharma! I've never known VM to phone back before especially from overseas call centres...anyway, I asked him to confirm everything was set. Apparently during peak ours the upload will be 5Mb but during off peak it goes to 10Mb. the download remains 100Mb unless I hit the fair use limit which isn't an issue.

The superhub rebooted again though and I guess it had pulled down the R36 firmware as the logon screen has a slightly swankier UI. Edit* It has been upped to R36, connection status link is in top right now :p

Pleased with that! Will check the 10Mb upload later tonight.

He fibbed to you about that part, if you're on 5mb upload then that's your upload, it won't change at different times of the day.

Might be why this area isn't getting doublespeed until July 2013 then, so while 100Mb down is available, the 10Mb up isn't.

Hmm.

Not a big issue really, Upload can wait, download is the important part!

Yeah upload won't happen until later, that's the same for everyone to be fair, or at least the majority.

More a little miffed at having to wait another year :p

Not any more though! 11.9MB/s is rather good :D

Edit*
12.1GB Downloaded in 16 minutes 42 seconds at an average of 12.3 MB/s

Yup, Can get used to this :p
