Fergie seems to be going for the big gamble this summer then.

I always think these young south americans are 50/50, could be a massive win or a costly fail.

If man utd break the bank to bring in van persie as well then surely anything but winning the league would be total let down

It never ceases to amaze me how so many people on here get so excited over the potential signing of a player that they've only ever seen youtube clips of. Liverpool fans with Gaston Ramirez were the same.

Give somebody a foreign name and spend a decent amount on them and going by supporter reaction, you'd think they're signing Messi.

As lemonkettaz touches on, how many of these South American teenage superstars actually live up to their hype? If Utd are genuinely in for him at the figures mentioned then it would be a huge gamble.

People getting excited over their club signing players with massive potential? Who'd have thought it. ;)

He's got 15 appearances for the Brazilian national team (not exactly something all players get).

Every signing is a risk, really.

I tend to work from the point of view that if United are interested in paying ~£30 million for any player, they will have watched more than a youtube clip of him to gauge his talent (ignore our charitable donation for Bebe). He looks like a good player, people who have been watching him for years now have said he is the real deal and he looked good against England in the recent friendly.

There haven't been a huge number of top name brazilian flops in the PL anyway. Robinho came into a poor City side as a marque signing and as a means to attract more top class talent. I wouldn't have said he was a failure as such.

Anderson has had injury issues for a few seasons now but was looking great at the start of last season till he was injured again. We will see if he turns into a great player either here or abroad but its not stupid to get excited about a potentially very good signing.

This massive potential is based on what you've read and/or saw on youtube or have you actually seen him play more than a couple of times? I've got a giant motorised satellite dish and even I can't pick up channels showing the Brazilian league.

My post was actually sparked by you claiming you'd rather sign Lucas Moura than RvP. Why would you rather sign a player that I suspect you've never really watched that's said to have 'massive potential' than a player you've seen week in week out for several years and know is/will be one of the best players in the League?

I get that but the way some people talk, you'd think they were Utd's scouts. This isn't specific to Utd. Whenever a clubs linked with a fairly obscure foreign player, we always get experts popping up telling us how amazing they are going to be and paying £x is an absolute bargain.

Lucas has some amazing highlight reel stuff considering his age.

But then im sure someone could make an absolutely amazing Nani video if they stuck to just the best bits.

I think that Nani could be great this season. I never felt that his style of play suited United as well as Valencia because we don't keep the ball at our feet enough and pass through teams.

We now have some players that look comfortable on the ball and are mobile looking for space.

Nani, Kagawa, Cleverly and Powell (by the looks of it) have a good first touch and vision for a pass, something we have been sorely lacking for a few seasons now. Its all too static and slow with Carrick and Scholes controlling things.

If by some miracle we got RvP and Moura, we would have a scary attacking force that is deadly on both the counter and direct approach.

I don't watch the Brazilian league often, no. As fez has said above, I'm assuming Manchester United don't decide to splash £30m~ on a player based on Youtube clips, so their expert scouts (who know more than all of us) will have decided he has a massive amount of potential, and from what I have seen, I can see how they've arrived at that conclusion.

Because, assuming he's a success, we'll likely have him for 10~ years instead of a few. I'd be quite happy if we got either, and both would be fantastic. There's also the fact that having two strikers that we regularly start would possibly mean fitting Kagawa in would be slightly more awkward, as I'd like to see Kagawa in behind Rooney instead of having to put up with Welbeck.

I think it's pretty impressive to have 15 caps for your senior side at the age of 19.

And as somebody said his highlight reel whilst obviously can be massively bias and unrepresentative of his failings, he's got a lot of good clips, at again the age of 19.

Looked good at the Riverside but Team GB were rubbish.

I'm not questioning why Utd may or may not spend £x on him. I'm questioning why supporters who know little to nothing about the player have suddenly become experts, using nothing but second hand info.

On Lucas over RvP; I'd have thought how good they are takes priority over how many seasons they might play for. You know RvP's an excellent player compared with, you've read that Lucas Moura has the potential to possibly become an excellent player. Personally I'd get more excited about signing a proven top class player than somebody that might become one.

I just find it strange. I can understand a degree of excitement but as I initially said, it's as if you're signing Messi.

I'm not an expert. I haven't claimed to be. Do you think people shouldn't bother posting unless they've seen every game a player has ever played, or should only discuss transfer related things that are 100% confirmed? That would make things pretty dull.

I'd like both. It wasn't a hugely serious comment that I'd qualified with a load of information. If I had to actually choose which one we signed, I'd have to speak to Fergie about his plans and so on. He'll know best. As if that would ever happen. :p

It's not 'strange', and it isn't as if we're singing Messi. I'd be hysterical. :o

Why aren't United in for Oscar? He's a playmaker who comes deep, controls the game - isn't that what United are after? You have loads of wingers!

Carroll for example :D

(imo he was always going to struggle for that price-tag - but its still surprising how badly he has fared)

For me its good that Utd are trying to get Brazilian flare, as well as a decent /low price for a double title winner from Germany. Whats just as promising from the Moura aspect is the amount of money Fergie still has available (given how bad we did in Europe)
