Hi guys,

Got what I think is an easy peesy question for ya, I am setting up a media streaming network whereby I will have a NAS unit with MKV files on it and the idea is that both my PC in my bedroom and a media box in the main room should just be able to connect to it 24/7 and stream the movies direct.

I have just purchased this:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-004-WD&tool=3

which covers streaming to the main room.

My question is, which would be best NAS unit to do the job? it needs to be at least 2 bay as I have a couple of 3TB drives. and able to transfer data at high speed via wifi as they are 720p and 1080p movies. and all for under 200 quid.

What do you guys recommend to do the job?

Cheers :)

DS212j would be a very good solution mate. I've done some reviews here

Any questions fire away either here or the email on my site

Thanks mate, my only question would be how well does it stream .MKV files to PCs and said media box and how easy it will be to set that up? thats all that I would be using it for.

Cheers

I had the model just up from the one linked above, the DS212 and it streamed content fine. It couldnt handle 100mg internet speeds though :D Traded in for a Proliant :p

I have the older DS211j and a great piece of kit it is. I stream movies and music from it to desktops and laptops around the house without any hassle.
Got a couple of fast 2TB drives in, RAID 1 for safety and away you go.
Always recommend the Synology stuff.

I have the DS212J and the WD live streaming and can easily stream 1080P MKV's wirelessly with no issues, it will even stream 3d content which I didn't expect it would be able to handle.

Thank you all for your help. . . but this comment alone has sold it to me, but there was one more question. . does anyone know if it supports the following hard drive:

Seagate 3TB Barracuda SATA 6GB/s 64MB 7200RPM 3.5" Hard Drive?

as I have a couple of these ready to be used. Sorry that will be the last question.

Cheers again :D

If you can stretch to a 4 bay unit, I'd recommend that. It's really simple to add another drive or two to increase storage and/or go RAID5 at a later date.
