Why do people hate GFWL so much?

Ah yeah we all get those, but you get a one time option to change it. If you did change it and it did not stick then I have no idea, strange. You can even set a name for offline profiles as well.

I dont remember there being an option to change it. There was a if you PAY us lots of money we will change it.

Offline profiles, so you have to have a separate profile if you want to play offline, use some magical hidden option if you dont want a auto generated username.

so what other pointless restrictions can we find with GFWL?

Dunno what's going on here, but all you really need is that one account (Whether it's the same as your Xbox 360 Live one or another) where you tied the game to and that's it. It will be for both online and offline modes.

It wouldn't be in any developer's or publisher's interest to release a game that's only playable on win8.

The majority of people don't upgrade their OS. The majority stick with what they had when they bought their PC from that place on the high st. And I doubt anyone will get very enthusiastic about win8 when it's released.

So any game that's playable only on win8 is going to lose a large chunk of potential players, and for what? A pat on the back from MS?

I hope to god Ubuntu Steam takes off, because Microsoft seem utterly determined to destroy PC gaming on their own. What are they trying to pull - are they hoping we'll all buy consoles?

Because i'd rather lop off a toe.

Yeah that is the only bad point (for me), your live account is always live and can not go offline. You can make an offline profile but the saves wont work on your online profile and achievements won't work. I think you can make your offline profile "appear" offline. The name change should be easy to find though. Can't remember of the top of my head where it is.

You can use your GFWL online profile in offline mode though even if you have no net connection as long as its downloaded once from the GFWL servers pull your LAN access cable or disable it see how it carries on as normal or try to logon & it will let you use the online GFWL profile its too late now obviously as GFWL is going away but this is one of the misconceptions of GFWL its more user friendly than Steam even if you never went online!

GFWL Online profile=works offline ;) when you go back online it will sync the achvs as well eventually!

All the GFWL online profile does is keep track of if you own the game legit or not but it still allows offline saving as long as you use the original online GFWL profile the game was registered with. The games just check to see if your using a GFWL online profile they do not check for always on net access (unless the publisher/developer has implemented this but apart from Bulletstorm, AOE Online & MS Flight do not think any others do).

Ah ta m8, I never knew that, interesting. Even though to be fair I am happy to just stay "online" :D

On a side note I got Red River from shopto at £4.95 or something. I also got the complete pack from Steam so I have two keys now which means me and my son can go online with it and bagged another retail GFWL title. I have been playing GOW a lot over the past few days, custom maps, horde mode etc. Some of the mods are really good.

You guys are lucky, when something goes wrong with a GfWL purchase it not only locks your GfWL account but your entire live account (XBOX, Hotmail, member live services). Had to use billing.microsoft.com and billing live services (very expensive £££ phone calls to sort it) Only tried it once, considered it hostageware ever since. No redeeming features, no need for all the bloat. Caused me more damage and heartache (imagine your hotmail account tied to a lot of services being suspended and your PAID services with microsoft being disabled on a whim). Not due to my fault, money was in my account and removed but Microsoft still considered it fraud AFTER they had removed money from my account. Never Again.

plus I have another 20 on either Gamefly (TRON Evolution with GFWL is exclusive to Gamefly in UK),Steam or GFWM as some are exclusive to GFWM only or digital only or I only bought the digital copy in a sale. All in I have 59 GFWL titles now :D been collecting since the launch in 2007 ;) shame after Dark Souls & 3 Capcom 2013 games thats probably the end of GFWL

Of the 6 I do not own Namco's Legend Of Galactic Heroes is the hardest to track down its a 2008 japan only GFWL title which is ultra rare nowadays as OOP so commands a high price on ebay but its rare to ever see for sale in new condition with an unused CD key. Then there are 2 Australian Rules Football titles 1 you need to import from Australia the other came out in June 2012 @ £29.99 on GFWM think I will wait for a sale on that title

Not quite as impressive as yours lol:

But I am getting there slowly.

Forgive my ignorance but why collect games simply because they use GFWL?

I wouldn't even do that with Steamworks games and I like Steam as opposed to abhorring GFWL.

I really don't like GFWL at all, I guess it just boils down to your own experiences with things, I know people who hate Steam because they had problems with it, I've never had problems with steam so think it's great.

As for why I specifically dislike GFWL, well in all the years I've tried using it I've never once had the darn thing just install and work, it has always been a right chew on to get working whether its been BSOD's after installing, corrupt TCP/IP and winsock after installing, stuck in a loop updating, corrupt saves games, lost save games, unable to connect, having to setup port forwarding to get working, the list of problems I've had with GFWL just seems endless and this is accross multiple machine builds, home routers, physical locations and ISP's.

I don't even want to hate on GFWL, I like my Xbox, I like achievements (Yes I'm shallow and love the little ping noise and comparing my gamerscore with friends), so the thoughts of being able to play some PC games on what is basically Xbox live but on PC, yes please, sounds great to me, just a shame the software MS have for it is so horrible. As a result I will avoid any game that uses GFWL unless it is a AAA must have game for me.

My latest pet peeve with GFWL is how long it takes to do anything, it takes longer to just sign into GFWL than it does for my machine to boot up, bah grumble....

I hate it because it is simply not necessary for PC gaming, if I wanted to be a Gamerscore whore and collect achievements like they're Pokemon I would buy an Xbox 360. I wouldn't mind if it was an optional install.

You don't have to though m8, make an offline profile only and you can just play/save and none of the rest that you don't like.

I think it comes down to Microsoft wanting to appear to be catering for PC Gaming by developing GFWL but not actually putting in enough resources (manpower, money etc) to challenge steam. This is why we get a very unpredictable programme with a limited shop attached compared to Steam.

I have had agro with GFWL on a couple of titles and although I usually work round them its such a hassle compared to my experience with steam.

Please don't misrepresent my comments. In my opinion, claiming you're going to buy every GFWL game there is, including the likes of Where's Waldo, just so you can have the entire collection, is completely off the wall, and pretty much invalidates anything further you have to say on the matter.

Several other people have asked why on earth you'd do something like this, and you've just ignored them.

Some people collect stamps, I suppose you would attack them in your shallow manner as well. In fact I am done with you, blocked/ignored. Amen brother
