Does windows 8 bring anything to PC Gamers?

Not sure what the fuss is about.
People who use Steam will continue to use Steam.

The BBC in thier article has tried to answer that for you Martini

"This is seen by commentators to be a reference to the inclusion of a Windows Store in the Microsoft operating system.

This is a shop through which users will be able to buy apps for their Windows 8 device.

On some versions of Windows 8, it will be the only way to get downloadable software such as games.

Microsoft takes a cut, up to 30%, of every sale made through this store.

This could be a significant threat to the massively successful Steam online game store that Valve runs and which gives it a commission on every title sold through the online market.

A Windows Store closed to everyone but Microsoft might reduce the range of games available for sale through Steam.

I don't have any experience with Steam and Windows 8 but they seems to be suggesting that Steam will integrate with Windows 8 therefore Microsoft could charge Valve for sales through Steam, like Itunes.

Valve are trying to develop a Linux version to avoid this.

installed it yesterday and it really is a p.o.s , stay well away from windows 8 the thing I hate most is that they thought it was a good idea removing the start menu so you have to swap back to the metro ui which takes even longer seriously?

Did they every introduce the features of 1 click restore or the super simple restore back to factory? That was one feature I was quite interested in (yeah I know its not hard to make a backup and stuff, but for average users it's a god send).

Surely there'll be the custom versions people make that will remove the app store and other things gamers wont like.

Gabe Newell calls Windows 8 a 'catastrophe'

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-18996377

Operating system Windows 8 will be a "catastrophe" for PC game makers, according to Valve Software's boss.

Speaking at the Casual Connect game conference in Seattle, Gabe Newell said the next version of Windows could mean big changes to the PC market.

Can't say I'll be rushing to get W8 like I did with 7. Slightly worrying read though. Microsoft's stance of "Can't beat em, copy them and force people to only use our service" is just ridiculous.

He means its a catastrophe for his company, not a catastrophe in itself.

If it does what Android/iOS did to the handheld gaming market (i.e. replace 'proper' games with casual games), then I can see his point.

But then Steam is already rammed full of casual games anyway...

What a load of garbage, why will it be a ctrastrophe. I'm running plenty of games on win8 including steam and it's fine.

I'll be honest and say I'm not clued up on all the features and versions of Windows 8, so I hope it's wrong, but this bit:

Now if that's true and not some retarded BBC mis-analysis, and some versions will be locked to only allow installations from the Windows store, that's a pretty horrendous flaw.

Fine if you're one of the people that buys one of the premium versions, but why should someone that will be supplied with a OEM home premium copy be locked out of running what they want on it?

Yes it is true, but you can't play x86 games on arm any way (ie tablets/phones as they use a different CPU), so it's just scaremongering ****.

Any game will run on x86 or will with a few minor tweaks, although I haven't found one bit of software that doesn't run yet.
X86 software can be advertised through the store if you choose, but can not be purchased. All desktop software/games will have to be purchased through 3rd parties and can't be purchased through the store.

So again overhyped rubbish, he's saying that because of the future w10/11/12, when the traditional desktop might die.

Does your motherboard have Windows 8 drivers or did you just install the Windows 7 ones?

Windows 8 is a major problem for Steam on Windows and is going to make a huge dent in Valve's profits. Microsoft's integrated app store (Windows Store?) is going to have an instant userbase and it sounds like Valve expect quite a number of publishers to use it. Especially if it can be used to bring Xbox and PC versions of games closer together.

Users will be in the position of either buying a digital copy of a game directly via windows, or via a third-party client (Steam). Considering that the majority of PC users (NOTE: Not PC gamers) don't know what Steam is, they are going to use the Windows Store rather than faf around downloading and installing another client.

That's why Valve are setting their sights on Linux and praying. They are set to lose a large chuck of money if Windows 8 takes off.
