Does windows 8 bring anything to PC Gamers?

Microsoft try something new and innovative, and people are calling it the death of the PC.

Mac add a feature which means that it can now sync notes on your iPhone, they get called geniuses.

The world, Y U NO MAKE SENSE

What a load of garbage, why will it be a ctrastrophe. I'm running plenty of games on win8 including steam and it's fine.

Because Microsoft might say they don't want Valve running Steam on Windows 8, and that games for windows should be sold on the Windows Store instead.

I agree on this, can't see a single reason to upgrade from 7 to 8.

Other than security, boot speed, running speed, and a ton of other usefull features(backup, reserch, supyncing) and for £15 you would be crazy not to buy it before jan when the crazy pre deal ends.

The BBC in thier article has tried to answer that for you Martini

"This is seen by commentators to be a reference to the inclusion of a Windows Store in the Microsoft operating system.

This is a shop through which users will be able to buy apps for their Windows 8 device.

On some versions of Windows 8, it will be the only way to get downloadable software such as games.

Microsoft takes a cut, up to 30%, of every sale made through this store.

This could be a significant threat to the massively successful Steam online game store that Valve runs and which gives it a commission on every title sold through the online market.

A Windows Store closed to everyone but Microsoft might reduce the range of games available for sale through Steam.

I don't have any experience with Steam and Windows 8 but they seems to be suggesting that Steam will integrate with Windows 8 therefore Microsoft could charge Valve for sales through Steam, like Itunes.

Valve are trying to develop a Linux version to avoid this.

This is only really relevant to the RT version of Windows 8 (non x86) - which are limited to apps only available through the Metro App Store. The x86 version will work in just the same way as Windows 7.

From a gamers point of view it works in exactly the same way as windows 7.

I am running the RT release on my wife's system and whilst I find it annoying on occassion, I don't find it too bad. I merely treat the metro screen as a glorified start menu (hit win key and start typing program name).

Having run the CP on my system (which runs Nvidia Surround in 3 x 24" portrait mode), I have to say that the Metro interface does not play well with multiple screens. This may have been a restriction in the CP but I couldn't use my side monitors for anything in Metro - they just showed the desktop (every app would only load on the middle screen). Once you are back on the desktop multi monitors work in just the same way as they do on windows 7 (ie; very well).

For those who don't know you can quickly shut down a Win 8 machine by depressing win key + Alt & hitting F4.

Does make me laugh how hes making out windows will force their store on customers...oh wait wait...steam do that too...

On top of that they can't sell through the store even if they wanted to, as it's desktop software. The store is for metro applications only. X86(desktop apps) can only be advertised through the store, they can not be sold.

Windows 8 is a major problem for Steam on Windows and is going to make a huge dent in Valve's profits. Microsoft's integrated app store (Windows Store?) is going to have an instant userbase and it sounds like Valve expect quite a number of publishers to use it. Especially if it can be used to bring Xbox and PC versions of games closer together.

Users will be in the position of either buying a virtual copy of a game directly via windows, or via a third-party client (Steam). Considering that the majority of PC users (NOTE: Not PC gamers) don't know what Steam is, they are going to use the Windows Store rather than faf around downloading and installing another client.

That's why Valve are setting their sights on Linux and praying. They are set to lose a large chuck of money if Windows 8 takes off.

One slight flaw in that.
If the user never knew what steam was in the first place, they are not a customer and will not cause valve to lose money, it may stop their rapid growth though. I will always be keeping steam, and buy games through it. I have a lot of games in my account.

Again complete rubbish, the store is for Metro ONLY, can you see gamers switching to casual gaming just because that's all that is available in the store.
