Any one living near Portsmouth?

I'm sure it's like most other cities, there are nice and nasty areas all over, though it can certainly be a bit chavtastic from my experience, unlike my sleepy little town of Petersfield which is pretty much a glorified retirement community these days :(

I live in Widley just up on the hill between waterlooville and cosham, its a nice area. Used to live in Denmead which was very nice before all the estates were built over there, I dont know what its like now. Portsmouth is ok I suppose but I hate cities and avoid going into it. Doesnt seem to be any decent looking wimmin in the whole of portsmouth though lol.

God I hope you're not my next door neighbour, if you are sorry for the noise.

Which part is the nice part and which part is the chav part?

Well...it's really quite hard to say though. Tesco Express tends to burn down quite a lot though...

I live quite near the first one linked (about a 10 min walk) - it's strategically placed in a council housey area for maximum alcohol and cigarette sales. :D

Never go to gosport it's cheap for a reason and full of navy families and the subsequent navy morons who go with it!

The sole reason I looked through this thread was to see if the matelots were getting some stick. I'm actually surprised you were the only person to bad mouth them.

I always assumed the local civvies hated the navy lot. There are some bad eggs but theres also plenty of sound people in the navy. They're not much different to anyone else except the majority of them spend all of their wages getting hammered :p

People are making out that it's a horrible place, Jesus Christ it's no different to any other town. What town have you been to where you know it's clean? The town centre is like any other town. I've lived in Southsea for 21 years and it's lovely, there are some very nice places in Portsmouth and obviously some slightly lower places like anywhere. Don't understand why people are slating it so much, especially people who don't even live there. It has a beach and most other positive things in walking distance, old Portsmouth etc, it's a very old town and has a lot to offer. I went to a private school there, 2 private schools infact and it's a lovely place to live if you're in the right areas. Around 5 train stations and 3 main ones right in town. I would recommend it to you, there are places a lot worse and Portsmouth is actually getting better each year. The beach gets better, has more things added to it like beach volleyball etc. The nightclubs down town are like any other nightclubs, tell me a nightclub that doesn't have 'sticky floors' stupid.

It's a very lovely place to live as long as you're not in the town centre, unless you don't mind noise from the clubs and uni lot! If I was you I'd have a look around at the nicer areas I.E Old Portsmouth, Soutsea, Eastney, the places nearer the beach but still not over priced! Portsmouth has a lot more to offer then people think. Don't listen to people's bad opinions, check the nice ones out and then check it out for yourself. Portsmouth is forever getting nicer.

Hope this helps you :)

From my girlfriend.

People like to over exaggerate to be "heard" :p Just look at the Olympics opening thread to see what I mean.

Some people are just like that.

Count me in for the portsmouth area , born and bred crowd, though apparently I'm told that to hear me talk you'd never guess it :) Still living here now, in the Stubbington area

Born and bred in Fratton. Lived in a variety of PO postcodes throughout my life. If the job is at Langstone Tech Park, then I would advise renting in the centre of Havant initially. That make your commute easily bikeable and you'll be nice and close to the train station to get you too the superior nightlife at Gunny or Guildhall on Friday and Saturday nights.

If location is right I'll do you a right move search map to identify the better bits and places to avoid.

Curious what job role is getting you a 10k up lift ?

Hello fellow OCUKers, I hve been contacted for a final interview for a new job near Portsmouth. I have never been there before, apart from over a week or so ago to take my first interview but I was only there for a very brief couple of hours, and well this job is offering me a £10,000 rise to my current salary, which at 23 is quite significant, so I am really 'gunning' for the job.

While I am doing some further research into the area and the company etc. I thought I'd ask any of you for your personal view on life in / near Portsmouth. Particularly social / activities. I see there are a few train stations dotted around and close to where this job is based, so as long as trains are decent I should get on well with that till I get me a car, either that or kill myself biking it every day.
