How to crack a truecrypt account?

Usually I keep my stuff very safe, and I have a password that I use primarily for my secure stuff and which is never used anywhere else etc etc

Except for that one time.......

So I'm left with a truecrypt account to get into. The stuff at the time wasn't valuable, but it's gotten a lot more interesting suddenly.

From what I remember the password on this one is very short (6-10 alphanumeric) so was wondering if I could brute force it?

Google showed one, but it was only for linux, but had some nifty features like CUDA etc.

Anything available for windows?

Brute forcing it would take months, The idea of a truecrypt folder is that is very safe, If you don't know the password, You're pretty much screwed.

Is there any one in particular you'd recommend for this job? My system is a i7 920, 6gb ddr3, gtx 480 setup.

Well live cd would probably be better, just use xbuntu.

Not really, 6 chars is weak and could take from 10 minutes up to 18 days.

He has a Truecrypt account that he created and has lost/forgotten the password. He now needs to get access to it

The FBI failed to break the encryption code of hard drives seized by federal police at the apartment of banker Daniel Dantas, in Rio de Janeiro, during Operation Satyagraha. The operation began in July 2008. According to a report published on Friday (25) by the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo, after a year of unsuccessful attempts, the U.S. federal police returned the equipment to Brazil in April.

According to the report, the fed only requested help from USA in early 2009, after experts from the National Institute of Criminology (INC) failed to decode the passwords on the hard drives. The government has no legal instrument to compel the manufacturer of the American encryption system or Dantas to give the access codes.

The equipment will remain under the protection of the feds. INC expect that new research data or technology could help them break the security codes. Opportunity Group reported that the two programs used in the equipment are available online. One is called Truecrypt and is free. The programs were used due to suspected espionage.

Maybe they have got developed better tools or maybe you are looking at taking the loss.

Won't take long to break a 6-char password, 8 is doable, 10 will take a while, you would probably have to wait for moores law to take effect and wait a couple of years for a faster processor/gpu.

?? how so - if he's got a rough idea idea of the length of the password then surely brute force is workable
