Gamer dies after 40 hour Diablo III marathon

40 hours doesn't sound too much, seems like something else contributed to him dying.

Plus, only playing a video game, how can that cause 'sheer exhaustion'

You don't die from just spending 40 hours infront of a PC on a one off.
It's highly likely people like this do it a lot, until this happens.

Lots of sleep deprivation, not enough nourishment, etc.

I have a feeling the story has been incorrectly reported, he probably did eat and go to the toilet, but not enough food and not enough sleep, people go through worse but know when to rest.

When I was younger there would be many a time I'd have 2 day sessions, but at least I did everything else normally. :|

From another article.

Tainan Kuo General Hospital Heart Department head Lu Yanyuan said: "The deceased sat for a long time in the internet cafe, his blood flow slowed and produced a blood clot, and the clot flowed through his lungs to the vein. This likely caused a pulmonary vein embolism and sudden death".

Zhuang was considered to be fit and strong and he also took part in Taekwondo competitions.

The internet cafe assistant named Chen said that Zhuang had patronised the cafe often in the recent months and would play for a very long time, often from afternoon until late at night, before leaving.

It's the same thing as when people get deep vein thrombosis whilst sitting still for too long whilst flying long-haul. If he'd gotten up and walked around a bit every few hours he would have probably been fine.

People normally move about and fidget even when they're "sitting still". Computer games have been shown to reduce this effect....... the amount varies in individuals. Some people even stop blinking when they're really concentrating on a game. I guess he was particularly susceptible to this effect and ended up sitting with his lower body completely motionless long enough for a blood clot to form.

Yikes.

Definitely need to get up and have a quick walk to stretch the legs every couple of hour or so, even if its just going downstairs for a drink.

How can you look at a screen for 40 hours none stop even if the game was addictive, I would just fall asleep.

Energy drinks, caffeine...

Someone where I used to work went to a LAN party and thought he might have overdone it on the energy drinks, so switched to drinking water from the big water jugs that were around. This went on for quite a while before he found out that the water was caffeinated water. He said he was wide awake for the best part of another 24 hours on top of however long he'd already been awake before he started feeling sleepy.

I would nowawadays but I am generally tired from work anyways.

I have played all nighters recently though when off from work and maybe played for 12/13 hour stints.

When I was younger though, myself and a mate with the help of drugs played Ultima Underworld from Friday teatime to Sunday night non stop without sleep.

You have any idea how hard Inferno was? Imagine the stress of 40 hours of Inferno on a weak gamer body.

Surely the fact he died playing a game is just a coincidence? During my less sensible years I have stayed awake longer without eating and only drinking cans of larger on a fairly regular basis and even now I berry occasionally I will have a heavy night and will skip sleep on a sat night.

There is food in beer though, so it will give your body some nutrition. I doubt you were also sat about for nearly two days not moving.

Unfortunatly I still seem to be in my less sensible years. :/
