Microsoft forced to rename Windows 8 - Metro...

To be honest I'm not sure whether it actually needs a new name, and whatever it ends up being will be consumer-oriented. 'Metro' doesnt really mean anything to anyone who isnt aware of the theory behind it and 'WinRT' style app is a good enough description for developers and IT pros.

'Content-centric' or 'Chromeless' is at least descriptive of the style. It needn't be anything fancy.

On a serious note though "The threat is believed to have been made by German retailer Metro AG"

We have a newspaper called Metro and city trains are called metros, there's also a car (or was) called metro.

Surely Metro is simply short hand for metropolitan - how can you argue IP over that?

Metro is short hand from the Greek word Metropolis. Which in Greek means Mother-City.

Which is why the word metro is usually associated with city related things.

Sash Windows?

That's pretty funny actually.

'Metro' in the WinRT sense is supposed to be a nod towards the signage style used in public transport hubs - clean, efficient with good use of typography and symbols where appropriate. It's both short and makes sense which must be a first for Microsoft branding and yet it looks like they are going to have to throw it all away.

I'm wondering why it's taken till RTM to become an issue.

The Start screen is the Start screen, but Metro referred to a whole new class of applications that are very distinct from 'desktop' software.
