Microsoft forced to rename Windows 8 - Metro...

On a serious note though "The threat is believed to have been made by German retailer Metro AG"

We have a newspaper called Metro and city trains are called metros, there's also a car (or was) called metro.

Surely Metro is simply short hand for metropolitan - how can you argue IP over that?

I thought this too, plus it's one company in Germany which probably most of the world doesn't know of and has no direct similarities to a software interface that I am aware of.

I thought in general trademarks weren't broken if they used for dissimilar products?

Sash Windows?

I'm a bit late to the thread, but my first thought was 'locked Windows' followed by 'broken Windows'. Anyway I find it quite short sighted of the aformentioned Metro Ag as they started out in 1996, one year after the Swedish Metro newspaper (apparently the largest global newspaper) which pre-dates our Metro newspaper by four years. It seems that the Swedish newspaper group isn't bothered by a retail company using Metro as it's name and also by a different newspaper group calling a paper the same name as it's own.

oh ok you mean the metro ag. Well metro is a term that is also used for train and several train companies use the term. It is a stupid name for a UI in my opinion.

I was just watching some more "windows 8 sucks" videos on youtube. some of them are funny.

Metro AG are probably not too worried about the odd national newspaper or other company using its TM for dissimilar or even slightly similar products. But with a major global entity that is different.

Perhaps we could have bulletproof windows, I wish.
