Anyone else getting these links on the forum?

And i cant understand why people would be upset with the fact their posts show up links to others. Its not like we're only discussing the good points of a product, bad things are said about products on here too, and those will also show hotlinks, although less likely to get clicked.

The reason I have an issue with it is that I don't want others to see my posts with advertisements in it, If I want to advertise something as good or bad then I'll do it by choice. I don't like people coming onto this forum and seeing a post of mine and thinking I'm just a person spamming advertisements in my posts.

I haven't read too much of the last couple pages, but if it stays as the way I understand it works right now then I wont leave the forums (like some have suggested they might) as although declining there is still good content here, all I will do is just mistype the keywords so that they don't end up as a link.

I know there are lots of people here that don't care how their posts look or what others think, but I do care if the forum does something beyond my control that can make me look like I'm spamming advertisements.

The vast majority of users will just continue on regardless of what happens with this advertising, and the owners are free to do whatever they like with the forum but I still find it disappointing that it's heading this way.

Well said, atleast some have a good sense of things

Anyway i'm going to let off some steam by killing zombies on dayz

Lol, I can't believe people are still complaining about this :p

Oh noes, the free forum provided by a computer store is putting keyword hyperlinks into posts, the audacity! this is a disgrace! its the end of the world! We don't pay a penny to use this forum we demand justice! Some people seriously need to get a grip lol ^^

think its more to do with how its been handled

no opt in or asking and even when you opt out it still is there for people viewing your posts

its not going to be changed so thats it from me on the matter . :)

I don't know why this hasn't been done on this forum before.
I find this very useful on other forums.

The plugin will need to be changed but I'm toying with the idea of letting members put forward their own keyword links for the non hardware forums.

Point in case - neil had mentioned dayz several times, I just though it was some 8-bit **** but when he linked it for a joke I clicked, and saw it was a mod for arma2 - now that interests me but I'd never have seen it otherwise.

My issue is not the actual advertising itself, it's more the fact that if I was a guest and I came here, I'd see this as quite unprofessional and "tacky", much like the "freebb" boards with advertising links though all the posts. I'm not personally bothered what happens, whether they stay or not, but I don't think it's a good look for the forums - at least, outside of the hardware and software sections, where it's likely if someone is in there they're looking for advice to buy something, which is fine.

I think the best option would be to simply allow users to disable links in their own posts and/or remove the links outside of hard/software. The idea of being able to have your own keyword links would be quite cool though, such as above with the links to steam, dayz, etc.

Some people are reacting as though they must click on every link in a post when on other forums I click very rarely, just the word that may interest me now and then.
If like me you have the will power not to click on threads you have no interest in and not click on links you have no interest in then I can't see a problem.
I do get what Neil is saying but he has a disclaimer now.

i think you are very slightly missing the point. There used to be a clear demarcation between the shop and the forums. More and more shop business has inserted itself into user forums either via specific shop threads promoting discounts etc which i think is fine because its very clear what the thread is about and if people are interested they click on the link.

But in a user created thread which has nothing to do with the shop then its a bit dodgy maybe not too serious at the moment but its the thin edge of the wedge. Once accepted as the norm - its a slippery slope :D

The secondary factor which has got people very annoyed despite the fact that this is a LITTLE thing...the occasional hyperlink...(it is a little thing yes) is this:

It is done without forum user foreknowledge. So the code is inserted into users posts you could say in an insidious fashion.

I wouldnt mind ads at the side or on other parts of forums - BUT just not IN a user post. The ad is part of what the user says. This is the main beef i reckon.

A users post, is their post, their opinion on life the universe and everything

Its not an Advertisement. :)

So to sum up - not bothered about ads but just not in *user* posts masquerading as part of a genuine user posts.

But you overreacted Neil. Threatening to take things away if your demands are not met? Hrmmm... its possible to convey your opinion and the mavity of your feelings without resorting to this :)

Anyway im not bothered myself as i have hardly seen any of these evil links :D Its the potential harm of it rather than the real time impact which people see.

All im gonna say :)
