Why didn't we go after Oscar again?

Duh because he's a midfielder? :p

Seriously though I haven't watched any of Brazil's games in the Olympics but from what I've read whilst Oscar has looked like everything we need Lucas on the other hand has looked every bit the Walcott mrk2 he's being spoke of being :o

The bit about him being much better than agger is fact.

exactly. agger is good but he's not that good and hasn't got an incredible injury track record. if city offer over £20m for him, they should pull their hand off but i'd still like to see them take city for as much as possible.

This should cheer Purdy up. Tony Barrett is reporting that City have told us that they're prepared to pay £18m for Agger but that we've told them we want more than £22m for him.

As I said last night, I'm Agger's biggest fan but a big fee for a player that's played less than half the games over the last 6 years has to be tempting.

Why? £22m is £2m less than an average defender for a very good one

well if he has only played half of the scheduled games over 6 years, this is surely being taken into account? a defender has to be incredibly good (as ferdinand was) to attract a premium.

We'll no doubt point to what City paid for Lescott but if City aren't willing to pay that sort of money now, would it be the right decision to turn down £22m, assuming Rodgers believes that he can spend that £22m and be better off for it, as a point of principle?

If Rodgers believes that he can spend £20m and improve the side as a whole then he should sell him for as much as we can above £20m, whether that be £20m or £50m.

Their age and injury record will play a part in their value too of course. Given the amount of injuries he's had, I can't imagine Agger playing well into his 30's like some players do and he's already 27.

Carzola fee supposedly under £15m which makes me marginally happier than the rumoured £20m that was being talked about last week.

I thought the stupidly high figures were all originally in Euros but lazy websites just stuck pound signs in front instead because nobody really had any idea what was going on?

That was also 10 years ago

i see your point but there's the (tongue in cheek but i think this actually does hold water) english tax to be taken into account, the potential, the upcoming threat from chelsea, the money being available etc.

i'd say it was money well spent tbh. he has been a true servant to the club (bar the ban, i''m still not 100% on what went on there) rio ferdinand is actually a very good example of a big investment giving a great, long term, return.

What's better, an average player available or a good player on the sideline?

That's what all this boils down to. If the club feels that it can replace Agger - even with somebody maybe not quite as good - with a player that's going to be available more than Agger will be and have some cash left over to spend else where then I can see him going.

I'm not saying Ferdinand was a bad buy, I'm saying we're being mugged considering the dumb money City have thrown at worse players. Lescott, Dzeko

but do any of those two have a sketchy fitness record? and i'm all for you getting as much as you can for him off city. that's 3 times i've said that now lol.

The issue i have with our transfer policy at the moment is there's clearly lots of work on shipping people out, probably required before getting people in, but - the season's literally a sneeze away and we have one of our toughest starts for ages. Its far from ideal to be messing around building the team still come second game of the season =/

In terms of preperation, it's very close. Anything over £20million or £18 million + Johnson is something we just have to consider. Just so glad they don't want Skrtel.

As a Liverpool fan are you really one to be talking about clubs spending over the top on players?

For the record Lescott was overpriced but he has proven to be a very good player. Dzeko at 27m wasn't cheap but he was arguably one of if not the best ST in the Bundesliga at the time and has done well for us since joining.
The price we paid for Dzeko is about right for a striker of his quality.

If Liverpool do indeed want Johnson then the deal will become much closer to 10m. He is easily worth 10m+ so it will make the transfer about right. Laughable to say 22m cash or 18m + Johnson.

Meh, I'd take £22m for Agger and run. Great defender, but we can get a solid replacement for half that if we hunt around a bit, and need to strengthen other areas more. Plus I imagine that if we turn City down he's going to spend half of next season getting friendly with the physic, and making it look like an idiotic decision.

Yes, it doesn't diminish my opinion on that subject at all, I have conceded we've overspent on average crap, but if you think due to my club spending a lot of money on a lot of crap/average makes my opinion on others clubs spending invalid, well yeah, derp.

For the record, we know. Agger is better, worth more, I'd only be happy with a lot more than Lescott + a proper replacement lined up, Dzeko for his price wasn't that great for you(Okay so far, better for 27m out there if that was the fee).

Johnson isn't worth £12m considering what he has done. Nothing.
