When have we ever signed top players? We usually go for youngsters and unknowns. In fact the few times we have gone for top players it hasn't really worked out for us.

lol at Kagawa being described as an also-ran I wonder why that is? Because he's from Japan as oppose to Brazil?

Nickg really cant see beyond Fifa can he :o

ferdinand...rooney....VanNis...Yorke....Andy Cole....I'm sure there are many more.

All but one of those are domestic players. That's a completely different situation. You're far more likely to lure an English top player (if they even exist now) than someone from abroad. Expeting people like Ozil to chose us over the higher paying Real Madrid is just lunacy.

Jaap stam? Ruud ? Rooney, rio, anderson etc..

Anderson was not a top player, Rio and Rooney were both bought at a time where we were the big money club in England (and some could argue that Rooney wasn't a top player yet) and both are English anyway. Ruud and Stam I'll give you but that's only because I have no idea if any other teams were after them at the time.

VanNis....you got veron as well, which didnt work out....Jaap Stam...

The only thing keeping me going is the spanking we are giving Australia and France in the Olympics.

:D

Especially after the complaints the French made about the English bikes (or "special wheels") .....and then one of their sprinters got Trott her 2nd Gold

Apparently Real Madrid have agreed a deal with Benfica for Axel Witsel, where that leaves Modric god knows - probably stuck at Spurs :p

(surely means the end for Sahin permanently as well)

So 3 players over 14 years of which only 2 worked out?

I take it back, clearly we have got a history of signing top players :p

Although domestic you can not dismiss the local talent that you got which were big signings. Like some mentioned.

Still more than most teams in the EPL until the big money arrived.

Who did United go after that they never got?

Bring on the Modric to Utd rumours...

Personally would like to see us go after Sahin, young, great prospect, won't cost 35+ from Spurs.

I would love to see no one bids for Modric and for him to sell for ~£20m next year. Levy is being a pillock and I hope he doesn't get the £40m he is after.

Your initial post claimed you usually go for youngsters or unknowns. That's not quite the same thing as what you're now saying regarding buying top players from abroad.

The reality lies somewhere in between the 2 claims. Going back to the start of the Premier League, through to the last 7 years or so, you signed the likes of Ince, Cantona, Cole, Yorke, Sheringham etc - ready made top performers, proven in the League. On top of those buys you brought in the likes of Veron, Stam & Van Nistelrooy from abroad. None of those players were unknowns or youngsters.

It's only in the last 5-6 years that you're main transfers have been younger, less established players.

Well off the top of my head:

Zidane, Ronaldinho, Ozil, Benzema, Alexis Sanchez, David Villa, Wesley Sneijder, Arjen Robben
