International Space Station passing over SOON!

Just turned all the lights off and went out into the back garden.

Saw the thing too, really bright and fast moving for maybe 90 seconds or so before it faded away.

Awe inspiring. Thank you OP :)

The International Space Station travels in orbit around Earth at a speed of 17,500 miles per hour (that's about 5 miles per second!). This means that the Space Station orbits Earth (and sees a sunrise) once every 92 minutes!

I saw a lot more of it than that and it looked 100 x better to my eye than it does through my phone but still :p

I went out to get that cat in, and noticed it passing over head. It was much brighter this time compared to the last time I saw it.

Is there a chance of seeing it from Leicestershire at 00:30?

My sources say the next pass is tomorrow, 10th August at 21:59.

It's my understanding that even though the ground track does pass over the UK you wouldn't be able to see it because it would be in shadow. That's why it doesn't appear in the lists of visible passes.

And by the way, we do have an Astronomy thread for this sort of stuff. I missed this until after the fact.

Heavens Above says it's passing over at 00:28 and will be visible with a magnitude of -1.2

Satellite AR also says it'll be visible so fingers crossed!

As for the other threads - you and Simulatorman don't need to get your knickers in a twist.

How may people with only a passing interest in space don't check the main threads. I have an interest but don't check them all the time, it's an easy way to give a heads up for people.

It'll pass over, people will stop posting and it'll drop off the page.

Nope, just had a look in Stellarium. It will just get over the horizon then will become eclipsed. You can't see much below 15° above the horizon in the UK anyway.

The whole point of the 'Official' threads is for them to be updated, kept on the front page while people discuss it then drop off. It's not so people go out of their way to search for them and check them every so often. There's nothing stopping you from just posting it in there. I thought we already resolved this last time?

I think the more important thing here is that almost anyone interested or simply looking up and noticing, is doing it with the other people, even if they dont know it.

Far more fascinating to me frankly.

Also the Russians have borked a launch and are now apparently endangering the station.

Fun. :(
