*** just a heads up before the vultures arrive.

I do not wish to claim ESA / sick benefit.
i have a recognised mental illness including depression an axiety.***

I’m desperate for some advice on leaving my job
and being able to claim job seekers allowance.

I am recognised with depression and anxiety with my GP.
I wish to leave my current job (security) and then claim
job seekers allowance while looking for other work.

Basically i cannot face returning to my current job
which requires me to sit on my own for 12 hour shifts doing
very little but watching a CCTV screen were nothing happens.
the isolation makes my depression worse and i cant continue doing this.
( trust me the above is the short version on how i feel )

I understand normally that if you voluntarily leave your job your aren't entitled to
job seekers allowance but i was wondering if this fell under any exceptional circumstances
that would in fact allow me to claim job seekers allowance ?

I want to work and do not want to claim any sickness benefit.

comments i dont want include: pull yourself together and get on with it etc.
If you cant relate to how someone with mental illness feels then im truely happy for you and very jelious. you lucky lucky people..

many thanks.

As hard as it might be, your best bet is maybe to look for other work while in the current job. Though I appreciate you sound at the end of your tether.

If you think doing nothing and getting paid for it is bad, doing nothing and being on the dole is probably worse, at least the job gives you some stability and routine.

I think you need to go and speak to you're local Job Centre? Only they can give you proper advise!

I hope you can get past your depression and anxiety, as I know how it feels.

Man up and get on with it.

The way the economy is you're going to get worse just sat at home being repeatedly pushed back when no-one wants to hire you.

Plus I'm pretty sure you won't be able to claim due to leaving your job voluntarily.

If you can get your GP or a community mental health nurse to corroborate that your current job is exacerbating your condition that may support your claim for JSA.

Yes speak to JSA and they can give you advice - I has same depression but I got pills from my GP that quite help to claim and normal but that slowly process as I started to used 3 years ago and still using it... it help me a lots to get it back to normal. Im still looking for part time work as Im still in JSA allowance at the moment, dont want any hard work that caused my health problems so look for better job for myself, if your JSA is accept then lots of form to fill it up,etc.. then they send you letter what happen next.. usual every two weeks to sign in

Sorry but you can't just start a thread and go 'nobody is allowed to criticise me or disagree' and expect to enforce it or people to abide by it. The world just doesn't work that way... let alone on here :p

It would be much better if you said 'please respect the fact that I have considered all the options and find this course of action the most appropriate'.

I expect there is a system in place but in my experience, it'll be most likely complicated, convoluted, and require copious amounts of hoop-jumping.

Best off popping down to your local job centre and asking there, but don't hand your notice in until you're 100% sure they'll cover you. I understand you're at the end of your tether but given the market you want to be sure you have enough to live on.

Best advice in the thread IMO.

Do you need to be looking at the screen for 12 hours?

Take a book, learn something new, study, listen to music... you have a job, many many others don't.

I was diagnosed with depression about 10 years ago, felt sorry for myself lots, blamed others then decided to pull my finger out as no one was going to help me unless I helped myself.

Why should the rest of us fund you? - you've got a job already - you just don't like it, get another job. I don't think its reasonable to expect to be funded by the rest of society when you're already employed and choose to leave. You're already capably of working, you want to work and you're not exactly the first person in the world to end up in a job you don't like....

I want to work and do not want to claim any sickness benefit.

Those benefits are DESIGNED for people like you, refusing to claim them is absurd and helps no one, least of all you.

Claiming them does not mean you can't look for work that more suits your illness.

Just get a grip, claim what you can claim and look for a better job. It's either that or stay in your current job and deal with it until you can find something else.

Those are your options, pick one and get on with your life and hopefully things will get better for you. Sitting around obsessing and putting up boundaries for yourself will not help.

I left my job 3 months ago due to being pushed into a new role that involved a lot of travelling. I wasn't comfortable with this as I do a lot in my spare time that I would miss out on (I'd rather continue with my social life and fitness routine than be forced to sleep in travelodges week in week out). I didn't claim JSA till the money I had saved ran out. They gave me a form stating reasons why I left my job and it seems they didn't even ask my previous employer as my first payment was processed on Thursday. I am due to start training on Monday though so should be back to work in a few weeks.
