Hi,
Just bought an OCZ Agility 3 240GB SSD from OCUK, installed it sunday. Has all been working fine until about an hour ago when I was using IE and all of a sudden a blue screen of death popped up saying there had been an error etc.. after about 30 seconds the computer restarted iself, but Windows failed to load.

Went into BIOS... SATA1 (where SSD is connected).. nothing recognised?! Tried restarting but it just said Windows could not start as a device was not found (the SSD I'm guessing). Told me to insert Windows 7 disc, restart and go into recovery mode. That did nothing, Windows repair on the cd couldn't find the SSD either, only the old HDD.

I turned the machine off, unplugged the SSD from SATA1 and tried it in SATA5, booted up and it worked fine for a few minutes. Windows then froze with programs just saying Not Responding, nothing working, not even task manager, so I had to hit the power button to restart. Same problem, SSD not recognised on SATA5. Tried SATA1 port again, nothing, tried other SATA ports and different cables... nothing.

Tried it with and with out HDD connected, didn't make a difference. Its not the SATA ports on the mobo as they work with my old HDD okay.

So is my new SSD dying? Did that first blue screen crash cause some corruption which is now causing these problems? In the side of the SSD I can see a little green light.

Thanks,
Pete

Are you using latest mb BIOS? Any firmware updates for that ssd?

Its stopped working again.

I havent updated the mobo BIOS or SSD firmware. How do I check what firmware version it is?

If I can get it working long enough to back the rest of my stuff up (have most of it backed up) then it will be going back to OCUK for a return & refund. I dont get how its working (being detected in BIOS) one minute then not the next? Will stick to regular HDDs for now.

It could be your mb BIOS needs updating to support it better, download as ssd benchmark it will tell you your firmware version

Personally I'd rma it for a Samsung 830,I'm not a great fan of ocz drives

ive been running a sandforce corsair force gt without any issue at all,not all sandforce drives are bad, most of it is down to poor early firmware

+1

Im no fan either having seen 6 (7 including a replacement) of the old vertex SSDs die on me a few years ago. Then I started using C300s and had no problems. As wazza said rma it quick before you get any more problems.

Will do, thanks for the advice everyone. Dont want to give up on SSDs just yet so will return it for another one. Will look for one in a similar price range, need 128gb minimun if anyone can make any recommendations. Will also update mobo bios.

The Samsung or Crucial drive would be the best bet, Samsung are doing a cash back offer from the 15th giving £20 back on some of their SSD's so it might be worth waiting to have a look then

Was looking at the Samsung ones, they do a notebook and desktop version, is there any difference in these that would stop me using the notebook one in my desktop? Only reason I ask is its a lot cheaper for the same thing?

Its the same ssd on both the desktop and notebook versions

Just buy the cheapest :D

OCZ + SSD + Sandforce controller = No sale for me after my last issues, similar to the ones described and eventually ending with a dead SSD with two stuck on lights at the back.
Replaced by my retailer over the counter with a Crucial M4, even though the OCZ was almost twelve months old.
I now have several Samsung's from the 830 series and a Plextor, none of which use a Sandforce controller.

Good luck with your RMA.

A few more bricks and I can build a house

Reliability for OCZ SSD's does seem a bit patchy, especially on some of the earlier drives. Though I do accept that some folks have/are having issues even with the later drives (IE. Vertex 3's etc.). Then there's folks (like me) that have used them for ages (2+ years) and no problems. My original Vertex 2 is now in my Laptop (used every day). Replaced this with a Vertex 2E in my main PC and a few weeks back, replaced this with a Vertex 4 and also added a second Vertex 4 as a data drive. And not had a single issue with any of them (though obviously the Vertex 4's have a Marvell controller rather than a Sandforce one). Even when the Vertex 2's were on quite early firmware, no BSOD coming out of sleep / hibernate, nothing... Just good luck I suppose.
