Can anyone here not ride a bike?

Pah, cycling is easy. 10 year old mountain bike with knobbly tyres, me in my baggy shorts and I can still outpace the lycra clad racer types. I only wish I had joined a club when I was younger but there wasn't anything available in inner Glasgow. Never had a problem with alkies getting in the way though. Like every city, they prefer to lie in doorways and not at the side of the road.

Swimming on the other hand, is a bit different. I never really learned to swim but I can swim well enough get back to shore if I fell in and that's about it. I wasn't really keen on swimming as a youngster as I was too busy belting around on my bike. Why I ever volunteered for MIRG is a mystery but I enjoyed it.

My young son is following in my footsteps as a fast cyclist but has easily surpassed my abilities as a swimer. Weekly lessons since he was 6 months now means he can do almost all swimming styles with ease and can put in a number of lengths before complaining of being tired. Not too shabby for a 6 year old.

Cycling? Haven't done that for years. Used to love going off out for the day out in the sticks on my own as a youngster.

I presume I can still ride, but had no need to for a long time.

Swimming, I can do that too. Used to swim leisurely for an hour a day to help myself toned without gaining any unwanted muscle.

Now I don't do it, bikinis and swimsuits are very much off limits right now :p

Learnt to ride as a toddler/youngin, then parents bought a push bike shop when I was 6.

Everyone I know learnt to swim as a baby when it's more of a reflex than a learned skill, water safety is HUGE back home. I don't know anyone who can't swim at least a basic stroke.

My girl friend is the same, her parents didnt let her ride when she was younger so she is not very confident at all. Always makes excuses not to go on a ride :(

My son is 15 and cant ride a bike, we have bought him several bikes over the years in an attempt to get him riding - he has absolutely no interest in it.

The last time I rode a bike was in 1975 but 1 month ago I took delivery of a road bike to commute.
Mrs Dimple wouldn't let me have a bike until I'd rode one so the shop let me try one on for size and it was like riding a bike.
When I was 14 and 17 I'd had two accidents with buses that had knocked my confidence.
Anyway, I'm doing quite well although I poo myself when going over 30mph and I've suddenly become a big hater of some car drivers and smashed botlles.

Tried when I was younger and couldn't do it. Then had a go at 18 in centre parts and got the hang of it straight away, had a crack at motocross too!

Keep it up Dimple. It's great fun overtaking cars who are pootling along at 30mph. Seeing the looks on the drivers faces is almost priceless. If you can maintain a demeanor of looking effortless as you do it, it's even better. Try and set yourself a target of causing a speed camera to flash and picture them scratching their heads as they review it.

Sure, but then I've not really had a need to own a bike, so haven't ever learnt to ride one.

Make me a donation of a selection of real ales and you can have my old mountain bike to learn to ride. Nothing actually wrong with it as far as I'm aware.
