***The Official Samsung Galaxy S III Thread***

Do people not root and custom Rom purely because of warentee ? First thing I've done with my last 4 droid handsets is root on day one. I'm a rootaholic ! Also I keep using phone in bed and drop it on my head .

Maybe I'm just not bothered by all thing rooting malarkey but I haven't rooted either of my two android phones I have ever had. Just don't feel the need to with the galaxy s3. Nothing majorly bothers me with this phone.

I just don't see the benefit? All I see is posts about people constantly changing roms to newer versions with less bugs/memory leaks.excited because camera now works etc. stock has everything working already so why use a rom?

Why? Because stock wasn't to my taste. I wanted:

- SDcard storage mod
- Long press skip volume skip track
- Lightflow
- Custom toggles
- Custom Kernel

Please a list of other small tweaks

Can apps not do something like long press skip? Also, what purpose do custom kernels give you? See a lot of people saying they have put on this or that kernel that in all honestly probably dont even know what it is or does. Not claiming you dont lol, just seems a fairly new thing for people to be talking about and now lots of people are using various different ones.

Personally I don't like being dependant on the manufacturer or carrier for my updates.

Also, since ICS/JB I prefer the stock look to Samsungs or HTC or whoever.

The big thing for me though, I like being able to backup app data and restore it. I've changed phone around 5 times in the last 12 months but have apps with data spanning back to a year and a half.

I've heard Google have given app devs to store data for accounts, so if you log in to a new phone, it brings back your data. Someone told me Tapatalk does this, anyone know if this is true?

+1

I never seen any reason to root any of my android phones...

Because I think that Cyanogenmod 9 looks nicer than stock and doesn't come full of bloat-ware, it is also a stable release and everything works great.

But sorry about having my own reasons for doing things your greatness.

This is a computer enthusiast forum, many of the things we play about with don't need to be done but where's the fun in leaving something stock :D

Well, no it doesn't actually. For example... Google Now. Jelly Bean itself could be another example. Stock Samsung ROM doesn't have that working.

Stock has what they want to give you working.

But that's fine. You're happy and you see no reason to root, then you're fine. For many of us, it's not... so we do :)

Quick question. Is it possible to flash back the stock kerel?

I'm thinking about flashing a new kernel. But before I do that, how would I extract my stock kernel incase I need to flash it back?

I just smashed the screen on mine by dropping it on concrete :l, was sitting in a rock case, guess they don't really protect against that!

Ouch that's bad luck! My Rock case saved my phone a few days ago! The raised lip on surrounding the screen saved my screen from shattering when I dropped it screen first onto the floor!

Just do a backup with CWM before hand.

Thank you :). I'll try it in the morning.

Yeh pretty depressing, I could have sworn I took insurance too.......but apparently I'm not insured so not sure what happened there! It still works fine, just the bottom quarter of the screen is smashed, so I'll have to make do for a couple of months then buy a new one :S

That's unlucky! A Tech21 case might have protected it.... Might! Sounds like it caught an unlucky angle though.
