Which one?

It looked like a blog more than a review, was reading it on the phone. Will try and get the link later.

Ok, so looks like the 3.0ltr is more sensible haha.

Sounds like someone has Z4 2.0 slow car justification syndrome, because the 2.0 Z4 is pointless.

All said and done i'd have the S2000 out of your list, the MX5 whilst great to drive is a bit slow, and the Z4 is a bit of a boat anchor vs the S2000.

That's a bit unfair - have you driven the 2 litre? It's alright tbh and pretty good on fuel, but no real benefit over the 3.0 unless getting 40mpg really matters or you just don't car about performance.

Surely you'd forgo the typical BMW running costs and buy a Mazda MX-5? Unless you just wanted something with a BMW badge. Also I can't see a 2l Z4 appealing to someone who has an S2000 on their list?

Completely agree - I'd have absolutely zero interest in a 2 litre z4 in amongst that list but the car itself is alright

Keeping tabs on this thread. I'm interested in similar cars for my upgrade and I keep swinging towards either the RX8 or the 350Z. S2000 insurance is insane.

Z4 3l is in budget. Ho hum... this is interesting.

Does seem that way, the S2000 being out on top. I might go view a 1999 JDM (2004 import) this weekend which looks amazing.

I am going to be one of those guys I absolutely hate... A tyre kicker. Might just be honest with the owner and mention it is simply to have a look and no intentions of buying.

Find a dealer with one, don't go wasting a private seller's time because they won't entertain you. The bloke is having to sell up because of health issues, I doubt he wants to mess about with test pilots.

Very good point. Will have a look, sure there will be some in Reading somewhere :)

Don't waste the poor guys time - it happens a lot with private sales & is incredibly annoying. Find one at a dealer and waste their time!

If looking at pre-2002 model, get the rear suspension checked over!

That's just it, previously I was looking at a S2000, did a fair amount of research and there are so many things to look for over so many revisions:

http://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/775801-what-to-look-for-when-buying-a-used-s2000/

So this brings me onto the purpose of this thread, I want to gather opinions of other motor enthusiasts on what they deem the better car. The S2000 (despite it's stupid insurance cost) seems to be pacing ahead in the choices.

So I will continue the discussion with a few other boards and get as many opinions as possible before I continue research.

This is just how I am, rather sad and thorough when it comes to research.

Yeah, there are quite a few differences between the years.

When I was looking for one (ended up ceasing as after my non-fault accident - they want £3.5k to insure one!) I was aiming for a 2002-2004 car as the best combination of (supposedly) fault-free suspension... but early enough before they dumbed down the suspension in 2004-2006.

As soon as insurance is more reasonable - I'll get getting one - I absolutely love the cars... they're a bit down on power for my liking - but the handling is just perfect... they're so wonderfully balanced.

Isnt the 2l Z4 a four pot (particularly of the age where the OP is likely to be looking if he has RX8s on his list)? And therefore unlikely to have 95% of the running costs of the 3.0?

The 2 litre Z4 is a decent car for somebody who just wants a bit of top down motoring but it doesn't belong in a list of performance roadsters as it isnt a performance roadster.

The 3 litre offers considerably better performance.

And never, ever, ever contact a private seller about a car, let alone go and actually view it, unless you have cash ready and waiting and will buy it if its the right car. Private sellers are not dealers, they are not businessmen - they are normal people wanting to sell a car and it's totally unacceptable to use them to further your research. If you want to browse, visit a shop.

Agreed on all points.

It is a 4 cylinder engine, yes. Though there are almost no particular engine-specific issues to watch for on the Z4 so most of the potential running costs are common across the range. The only real difference cost wise between a 2 litre and a 3 litre will be fuel consumption (Which is actually suprisingly good on the 3 litre), insurance and minor servicing differences.

Yes, back to back with the 3.0 about 3 years ago, to me the saving grace of the Z4 and the only reason I’d pick one over a Mk3 MX5 is it's excellent engine and increased performance vs the 5, for which I’d be willing to take a knock on out right driving fun.

If i wanted both performance and back road fun then i'd pick the S2000, it's simply a matter of what you want out of the car.

Max £7500, so not much to play with, will obviously more than likely be a private buy. Not garage.

However, any cars linked will be instantly ignored as I won't be buying for a while, just simply doing research into which will give the biggest grin per pound haha.

Will be plenty in that range.

Any paticular reason why the S2000 is so high on insurance? High crash rate? What's the deal?

If I could go back in time I wouldve taken the S2000 over my RX8.

Would love to own one. However, cant seem to find decent insurance quotes for one.
