no idea what any of that mean btw...

any good???

i was doing a lot of other stuff on pc at same time downloading etc, will that effect it?

clearly a lot of stupid people in this thread, all screenshots posted above the users are still running the msahci driver.

would be best not to take advice from these fools if you value your cash.

yes looks fine, you can if you want go to your motherboard website, type in your mb model and download/install the latest intel rapid storage drivers, they do increase performance

As wazza300 says "yes looks fine"

EG: http://www.thinkcomputers.org/samsung-830-series-128gb-solid-state-drive-review/7/

As to whether to use either the stock AHCI drivers that Windows 7 supplies(MSAHCI) or the Intel RST drivers. I'm not convinced that it's quite as straight forward a decision as some make out (only my personal experience here... not looking for a flame war). Basically try them and see if they make a difference, you can always sunsequently uninstall them

As an example. It made little or no difference on either of my Vertex 2, or 2E drives. But made a noticeable difference (especially 4K writes) on my two Vertex 4 drives.

To quote from one reasonably reputable source:

For the typical user, the difference in the performance between Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) and native MSAHCI (standard in Win 7) cannot be visually observed in performance. Our analysis has shown that, although the two are similar in performance, different versions of RST may provide significantly different performance results, some of which may even be lower than AHCI.

One comment maybe worth making. Is if you want to see the best results in SSD benchmarks, then you need to disable Intel Speed step, either via BIOS, or in W7 power plan. So that your CPU is running at a decent lick (IE top speed). As 4k writes heavily dependant on CPU.

PS. The seq read/writes in your ATTO run are pretty much smack on and agree with Samsung's advertised speeds and that's with the stock W7 AHCI drivers.

Ive just got the Kingston 120GB SSD drive. My mobo is a Asus M4A785TD-M AMD, Im guessing that I don't need intel rapid storage drivers? Is there an AMD equivalent? Had a quick look on the Asus site and the software available didn't seem to match up to something like rapid storage drivers?

if your new to SSD's then let me give you the best advice anyone can possible offer.
Avoid anything thats using Sandforce controller.

I think that's a bit harsh, newer firmware has fixed all the early issues,no trouble here with my corsair sandforce drive,I've seen a few ocz agility die but havnt seen any others on here, sandisk, corsair ect

I'm assuming he could also just run with the stock W7 AHCI drivers if he wanted as well?

Did not the AMD storage drivers have a bit of a shaky reputation at one point?

First to admit that I'm no expert here.

I dont see why not. I saw a boost with the AMD drivers but he might not i guess.

If Intel can't get Sandforce to work (after extensive validation), no-one can. My shiny new 520 caused daily F4 BSODs, until I replaced it with a shinier Samsung 830. Check Intel's forums for disgruntled Mac and laptop Sandforce users (mine was with a Z68/2500K desktop). You may get lucky and have no issues, or you can "play safe" with the 830 or M4.

IMHO the SF-2281 is designed for "headline" speeds with compressible data. Beyond benchmarks, it has serious flaws (including borked AES-256 encryption). At launch, it was the fastest 6gbps controller by far - nowadays there are much better alternatives.

Thanks guys, installed the AMD drivers update and everything is running smoothly. Didnt bench before and after though so dont know if the AMD update is any quicker.

Edit, just done first quick bench with ATTO. Top write speed was just under 250MB/s and read ~275MB/s . I guess this is limited by the mobo somehow as its fairly old, or should I be getting quicker speeds?

so should i install the intel drivers or stick with ahci drivers?

the people who have tried both with there 830's did you see a performance increase?

msahci - 709 (r337/w198) AS-SSD
iaStor - 712 (r352/w178)

Sequential r/w speeds and access times were very similar, while 4k-64Thrd write was 25% faster with msahci (but hardly ever used). Overall there wasn't much in it, but I've stuck with iaStor for the improved read performance.
