Arsenal and Manchester United making progress over Robin van Persie transfer

United indicated that they were ready to improve their initial bid of around £12 million, which was rejected, and, while the two clubs remain apart in their valuations, they were locked in talks on Tuesday night.

United are understood to be Van Persie’s preferred destination but they are reluctant to spend more than £15 million on someone who is 29 and has a mixed injury record.

Arsenal have made it clear that they want at least £20 million for their captain and star player but there is now a hope that, with add-ons, agreement could be reached on a compromise deal.

Van Persie, meanwhile, has been warned that he can expect to be booed at the Emirates on Saturday if he has not been sold by Arsène Wenger before their Premier League opener against Sunderland.

Although there are doubts about his match fitness, the expectation is that Van Persie will be included in the Arsenal squad if no deal has been completed.

Hopefully we can get something sorted out soon. It's no good fussing over a few million, really.

As much as I'm a glutton for any kind of postive news on the RVP front even I have to admit that other than the headline there's nothing actually in the way of news in that piece Robbo :p :(

Conversely, you lot see to take everything Fergie says as gospel ;).

Predictable. Such as?

Really? Nobody has said yet that we're actually in negotiations.

Here you go, try the Mirror: http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/robin-van-persie-manchester-united-1261379 :p

The song thing has been pretty quickly followed by quotes of Song or his agent saying they want to stay at Arsenal and sign a new contract.

As for the unsettling that gooners love to accuse Barca fans of, rumour in the press of "Song to barca" then the press ask all the Barca players about it next time they speak to them and obviously say "we'd like to have him", if he comes or not, no need to say "hate the guy, no way, manager is an idiot to bring him in".

What I do wonder is, can't Song's agent get together with some agent for a Barca player, and say "hey, if you get them to put in a bid I can get a better contract offer, throw you some cash".

Can't see it myself, not at all, he is no where near good enough, he hasn't played a defensive position(without bad consequences) in over two years.... would Barca buy a player who has played attacking central mid for the past two seasons? Xavi, Iniesta, Cesc, Busquets..... Song, lol.

He'd be a cracking Xavi replacement, no? ;)

I would seriously wet myself if Song goes to Barcelona, just to see DM ranting that Barcelona are as stupid as Wenger is, and going an a rant about how useless Song is, and how he's useless, and then go on to use stats to prove that Song's stats mean nothing!

It will be amazing, even though I don't actually want Song to leave, because unlike DM, I realise he is in fact, a good player.

Yup, good clubs can't buy bad players, right, so if Barca bought him its proof he's good as that seems to be the argument you're making. Should I point out that Guardiola who has won everything, bought Hleb, who was utter turd and he tried to get rid of him immediately, so Barca under a rookie manager who isn't proven good or bad can't make a bad buy?

You THINK Song is a good player, I think he is a poor player, the fact that he makes MASSIVE mistakes in just about every single "big" game he's played in suggests to me that I'm right, you're wrong. Unlike many I don't deem a couple goals or not costing us against the worst teams in the league worthy of calling a player good.

As for RVP/Fergie/Wenger and who is telling the truth, I would point out that Wenger rarely utters a word about a player before the day he signs(or sells) a player. He was saying right up till the day Nasri was sold that he wouldn't sign in, the club wouldn't find any value acceptable and that no deal was being talked about... that's what he does. I don't much care either way, some managers talk a lot, some don't, RVP has said he wants to leave in as many words, afaik he's only really said he won't sign a new contract, not that he has to leave this season.

What Wenger says publically really doesn't count as he's said such utter BS so frequently before. Just go look at the myriad of quotes on Nasri and refusing to sell him last summer.

Fergie has spoken plenty of BS before himself, I believe he's said he wouldn't sell Real Madrid a virus let alone a player before.......

@henrywinter:
Surreal to hear people doubting RVP & Rooney dovetailing. 2 top-class players will love linking. Goals galore. Thoughts with Welbeck tho

Almost talking like its a forgone conclusion....

Wenger should be hawking him round European clubs for £15 million but within the EPL for at least £20 million. Transfers within the PL usually come back to bite you on the arse. Oh, and it will annoy Sir Alex which is never a bad thing.
