Hi all, going away to london for the weekend, been trying to work out how to get around and the travelcard looks like my best bet.

I cant find anywhere online to buy one though, do you have to have an oyster card before you can buy? I just want to be able to get from tower bridge station to near oxford circus and back, am I being extremely dumb? On the oyster card site, I cant even buy one that starts travel in october? it all seems to end mid september

It's not a foreign country, it's just London.

Turn up, buy Oyster card, top up £20. If you run out, top it up again.

Just buy a zone 1-2 travelcard for the day you need to travel from the station.

Don't even do that, just get an Oyster card, put some credit on it and it'll automatically cap at the Travelcard cost if applicable, and charge you less if not. You can hand it back at the end and get your deposit back.

Off-peak 1-2 Travelcard £7.00

Oyster: Any journey in zone 1 - £2.00, maximum cap within zones 1 and 2 £7.00

If you're certain to make more than 3 journeys a day (including buses), skip the hassle of the £5 Oyster deposit and its inbuilt "touch in/out failure" penalties and just buy the Travelcard.

Or just remember to touch out - get the deposit back at the end and don't worry about how many journeys you have to make to get best value?

How many days are you going for?
If just two days, all you'll need is a travel card for each day. Costs £8.50 per day.
Much easier, don't need to buy an Oyster card, and risk over paying if you forget to swipe out at a station (the ones with open gates)

For the stations he's going between, touching out won't be an issue.

Buy an Oyster, unless you want to over pay.

You can walk that in less than 20 minutes

Screw the tube in this weather , just walk its much better.

Tower Bridge to Oxford Circus is not too far to walk, as above. It can even be quite scenic and pleasant as most of the route is along the river. However I'd say it's quite a bit longer than 20mins.. 40mins is more likely, unless you really yomp it.

Don't be afraid to get an oyster card. Takes as much time to buy as buying a travel card and is just as much bother to use as a travel card.
