Yep, putting yourself in that position, especially with things like I'd never join another club in England is it any wonder you end up hated.

Van Persie always had a bit of a nasty gob****e streak in him anyways, just one more reason to dislike him now

EDIT: Fret not arsenal fans

Any chance you can find a quote of RVP saying he'd never join another club in England?

It's really very simple 99% of football fans are stupid and semi literate. That image with an RVP quote, assuming its true, says he WANTS to win trophies with Arsenal, if you gave him the choice of 10mil a year AND a CERTAIN trophy, he'd choose to do it with Arsenal. That doesn't mean at some stage you don't give up on your dream. Arsenal aren't going to win a trophy this season, not last season, not till something fundamental changes.

People keep randomly saying that in his statement about not signing a new contract he was looking for new signings of higher quality players, and somehow the two signings would probably change his mind. Firstly again he was looking for fundamental changes, not having good players is not even in the top 10 reasons we haven't won anything in the last 7-8 years. People were assuming he wanted higher quality signings, nothing more or less.

He didn't say anywhere in that statement he won't join another club, he merely states his dream, which is to win trophies with Arsenal, he's become convinced(correctly) that Arsenal won't win trophies, so does he give up his career goals of trophies completely or move to another team. Its not his ultimate dream, its still pretty damn good winning trophies and its better than NOT winning trophies which is all Arsenal can offer.

It's also worth noting that statement was around 16 months ago, he didn't say this three weeks ago then leave. My ultimate dream is to be a footballer and win trophies with Arsenal.... doesn't mean I won't do other things when that dream isn't possible. As for nasty player, pot, kettle, negrito.... wait the last one isn't mean in south america.

Skrtel, Gerrard, Suarez, Adam.... RVP's nastiness isn't a patch on theirs.

I don't get sentimental over players leaving Arsenal now. At the end of the day, all the power is with the player now so I expect no less.

From a business perspective, the RVP deal is great for Arsenal. He's 29, only had one injury free season and has 1 year left on his contract, and Man Utd are going to pay £24m!! Fine by me.

Although if RVP gets injured early in the season and is out for a prolonged period, I'll have a little chortle.

I imagine it irks Arsenal fan because he has been so vocal about his love of Arsenal. Now he is putting himself before the club all his prior comments seem disingenuous. If he was quieter he may not have roused such ire.

The real issue is the fact that fans lap it up - all the badge kissing and proclamations of love for the club should be taken with a pinch of salt. Some players may mean it, some don't, but either way we shouldn't place any long-term reliance on it.

Loyalty to me is shown by actions on the pitch not through words in the media. I certainly don't hold any ill-feeling towards RvP, Fabgregas, Nasri, Clichy, Toure etc. Yes fair enough I do take issue with Anelka, Cole and Adebayor but that is more to do with derogatory actions towards the club than a question of loyalty. I haven't seen any negative comments from RvP just the fact that he doesn't want to sign a new deal at Arsenal which is his perogative.

If you look at life in general, plenty of people say things with the best intentions at the time, but then circumstances change, or don't develop as they expected/wished. Heck take marriages for example, don't half of those fail and in theory the declaration of love is even stronger.

Actually I was referring to Torres and one of the reason he ended up hated, not RVP, but he came out with all that other rubbish it would seem. (Assuming it is true.)

And lol@second bit. As for the rest, didn't read.

He didn't want to play for us so he had to go, but unfortunately in such a way that he'll now be forever lumped in the Cashley/Ade camp rather than Fabregas or Eduardo, which is a pity as he could have been another Bergkamp. The thing with him is he publicly dissed the club a few weeks ago moaning about our ambition - then we make some decent signings - and... well, Darren Dein's his manager isn't he? That guy's job seems to be working with Arsenal players to convince them to move elsewhere.

When we lost Fabregas we basically lost the one player in the team who was involved in every goal or chance we created, and although Nasri was a greedy **** we all saw how Gervinho took his job and did it much worse too - RVP stepped up and kept us going when our style of play was forcibly changed. Hoof it to him, he scores, phew.

With the signings we've made so far I'm more positive about recovering from last summer's exits, playing some decent football again (we were pretty un-Arsenal last year) and scoring goals. Okay Cologne weren't very good but with a hodge-podge team we pretty much ruined them via the midfield and attacking link up play. What I care about most this season is whether this talking up of Bould by the defenders translates into improved defending and organisation (as a team) on the pitch.

I'd be happy to let Song go as well - for every one of the handful of lobbed passes that led to goals, he got booked nearly every game, couldn't defend and there were other players in the team that should be attacking up the pitch that had to sit back because of him. We bought him for £400k - if Barca really want him for whatever figure is being banded about it'll be another profitable sale. I'd hope we sign a couple more players though as we got ruined last season when we had all our fullbacks injured and had to put people like Djourou there who got exposed horribly.

Pretty much, though I would agree if he'd made insanely bold claims he would be, on dodgy ground even if most statements are made to make fans like them, true or not. However all he ever stated what was his first choice is, win stuff with Arsenal, since then, we sold Cesc, Nasri, Clichy, getting shot of Bendtner, Vela, gave Diaby, Rosicky, Djourou new contracts, bought Mertesacker, Santos, Gervinho, and bought benny in on loan...... Arshavin has been benched and loaned out, after a season with 10 goals 18 assists the fans and manager turned on him for no apparent reason, things change, the same mistakes were made.

Lastly I believe that statement was made 7 days, 7 whole days before we threw away the Carling cup to Brum, a team that got relegated, not least because we played an INJURED Cesc in a season he struggled with his hamstring days before the final causing him to miss the final. Same mistakes, same problems, same mentality, same inability to win. If anything in the past 16 months persuaded him to give up on his dream, it would have been that cup loss and Cesc leaving at the end of the season.

Oh (and on topic) Arsenal have made a killing on RVP, over 20m for a player determined to leave at the end of his contract next year is amazing money!

True, but at the same time he is a truely world class player ( something Man United need more of!) and there is a good 3 years of prime time left in him i would have thought.

Compare it to £15 for Fletcher and it is a bargain for United!

lol, Martin O'neill really shouldn't get a job as a manager without the club insisting on a director of football to do all the transfers. 15mil for Fletcher... Cisse was 9mil and Ba was free, there are a dozen fantastic deals on strikers every season, 15mil for Fletcher is beyond laughable.

24mil is a good deal regardless, the 15mil Fletcher deal just makes O'neill look like a pratt.

Fletcher is looking more comical by the day, I really hope Sunderland match the asking price to show up how silly O'Neil looks... (feels odd agreeing with DM though)

He is world class, but I really don't see how the system will work with Rooney and Kagawa more or less fighting for the same interlinking of the striker and midfield role. He does add to the world class status of the squad, but I think Arsenal have come off better with 24m for a player that didn't want to be there any more and United probably will struggle to play every game (the new Berbatov maybe?)

Has this Fletcher deal been confirmed yet, last I heard they turned down £13m.

Wolves are holding out (quite rightly) for 15m, they know Sunderland are desperate for him (lack of home grown players) and are waiting patiently for them to pay up...

You really think so? I that's the absolute best case scenario for Utd - not sure how realistic it is though given his injury record and age.

Well as long as he stays fit, why not?

Drogba is 34 and was still a beast of a striker last season.

RVP has only just turned 29 as well ( a week ago)

O'Neil also spent an absolute fortune at Villa on wages, not so much transfer fees.

He is a good manager but he does spend a lot. Must be something in the water in Sunderland that makes managers overspend on players.

The staying fit part is quite a big doubt over RvP though. I mentioned this regarding Agger too - given the injuries he's had, I'd be surprised if he manages to play on (to a high standard at least) well into his 30's.

Sunderland should just pursue other targets, I know they are desperate following the departures of Bent, Gyan, Wellbeck and Bendtner but they shouldn't be held to ransom. They spunked £9m on Wickham so they need to start playing him, Campbell seemed to return from injury and I'm not sure about Dong.

They do need a striker but £15m for a Championship player is taking the mick, I bet £10m would get them equal quality elsewhere. Heck they could probably get Bendtner back for that sort of money. Or maybe consider the loan route again.

To be honest the best part of all this has been the abuse directed towards that stain on humanity, Piers Morgan. I think we should have a great season with the team we have. Midfield was only an issue last season because of the number of injuries and I think that at least one of our boys will step up. If Cleverly or Anderson don't have a great season Fergie will bring someone new to the squad in January I should think (if its affecting our title chances).
