3570K Silent Cooler with PWM

Hi,

I would appreciate your suggestions.

My setup:

3570K
P8Z77-V Mobo
Fractal Design R4 Case
Low profile RAM

I am looking for a cpu cooler that is silent at stock, and as silent as possible when overclocked. I will not be overclocking immediately, but will be using the onboard graphics.

Budget is flexible, though ideally no more than £65. I'm looking for best bang for buck.

Also I would prefer PWM fans as that is what my motherboard's cpu fan header uses.

I would appreciate your suggestions.

Thanks

I have the D-14, it's not silent at full speed but it's not really loud either. You can't really hear any fan noise mostly just air pushing against heatsink. First hand I have no idea but wouldn't expect it to be loud at all. I don't know of any fans that are truly silent above 1000 RPM. In the R4 I think you would struggle to hear the D-14 and possibly the Phanteks, hopefully someone can comment that owns one.

My D-14 is at 1300RPM all the time, at 1000 I can't hear it.

If you have a fan controller it doesn't matter if fans are 3 or 4pin PWM? My board has 4pin headers but I use 3 pin and control the fans myself.

Alpenfohn K2
Noctua NH-D14 2011 (only has 2011 mounts but has PWM fans)
Phanteks PH-TC14PE (no PWM fans but has PWM adaptor to run them PWM)
Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E
Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E Extreme (2x TY-143 2500rpm fans)

If you like the Silver Arrow SB-E you might want the Silver Arrow SB-E Extreme. Only review I've seen puts it 7c better than H100 and same loudness. ;) And it's only 4 quid more. ;) than SB-E... and cheaper than Phanteks.

Sorry but Silver Arrow out performs all in tests and is quieter... D-14 and Phanteks are about the same but I've seen D-14 have an edge over it and also it's quieter.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

@ BrianB: The motherboard's CPU header is PWM only, it does have other fan headers which are also voltage controlled, but I would prefer to use the CPU one hence why I want PWM fans.

@doyll & Uncle Petey: Silver Arrow SB-E appeals to me the most, however I am concerned about it being HUGE. I think it should just about fit into my case but will it end up touching the graphics card (atm I'm using onboard but will be adding one soon)? There is a PCI-E slot before the graphics slot.

The Silver Arrow SB-E Extreme could be an alternative as it's slightly smaller but it seems much more louder.

Am I worrying over nothing, will the Silver Arrow SB-E fit comfortably?

Is there anything else I should take into account?

I must have been reading the wrong internet... Everyone else too for that matter.

Edit:
@Noodles02: The Extreme is only louder than the normal SB-E when you up the fan speed.
I don't see why it shouldn't fit. Unless your mobo has an abnormally low cpu location or something. It will cover the first PCI-e slot though.

Other than that, make sure your general case airflow is in decent order and you're golden.

No sorry seems I was reading the wrong internet. I thought the Phanteks was too good to be true. Turns out it's just too good. Well, not the quietest but performers best according to the reviews I just looked at.

Seems at full whack the Arrow is still better, but at lower rpm the Phanteks seems to have the best heatsink to beat the rest at 800rpm. Probably just down to fans. I'd get a Phantek's now if I didn't already have the D-14.

Put all three in a bag and dump them out. The one out first is the best. :D

Silver Arrow SB-E and Silver Arrow SB-E Extreme are same cooler just different fans. I have TY-140, TY-143 and Phanteks fans. Very little difference in sound volume at same rpm. None of them make enough noise to be a problem below 1050rpm... and if you need more rpm than that your cpu will be above 95% load.

The issue is that it might touch/block the GPU.
I can't tell how much space I have on the motherboard from cpu to the slots as it's still on it's way to me.
Other than that, i'm practically sold on it.
If it blocks the first GPU slot then it's a dealbreaker for me.

What did you decide on? That macho thing is hideous to me. There's not bad choice here though with all of the coolers suggested.
