How are they generally? I'm looking at something to get me out and get me fitter and thinner. The 2010 Carrera Fury appears to be a bit of a winner, but its difficult to find any, and those that you do find are £400+, which is over my budget. While I don't want to be spending loads, I do want to spend enough to encorage me to use the bike rather than not bother about it as it only cost me £100 or whatever. I've notice there are other Carreras that seem ok in the current range (2011/12 models) that are popping up on auction sites, etc. Namely the Vulcan and the Kraken.

Are these any good for the money? They are sub £300 easily second hand. Are they a decent bet or are there other bikes at this price that would be better?

I had a Carrera Vulcan new a few years back. Wasn't a bad bike, I still have it now but it never gets used.

Whats your budget?

Nothing wrong with Carrera bikes for the money, I started out with a Kraken with the same intention as you 4/5 years ago, great bike. Also look at Decathlon for their Rockrider bikes. Another popular choice is a Specialized Hardrock.

Decent enough starter bikes, also check out specialized bikes.
The major online shops will be selling off their 2012 stock in the coming months, so you may get a bargain there.

On another note, don't rely on the bike to give you motivation, seriously get yourself booked into an event for next year, something that'll stretch you. Tell everyone you're doing it, then you'll be forced to improve!

I did that with the event in my sig, not with the intention of getting fit in particular, but it sure as hell has been my source of motivation!

Budget is around £250 really. Hard tail cross country style bike to use around the New Forest and other (flat :p) areas around me.

Generally? I can't say for sure on their mountain bikes, but while the road ones are a bit heavy and not very prettily welded, they are pretty solid as far as bikes in that price bracket go. You could spend your money a lot worse, I'd say.

Thread revival. I was all geared up for getting a bike last year but my car then swallowed all my free cash, then it got cold and wet and I parked the idea.

However, getting back onboard now, but obviously all the bikes I was looking at have now moved on. Whats the current range of Carreras like? Any bargains to be had with old stock?

The TDF is currently £300, which is a good buy, but you should also check of Decathlon have the Triban 3 in stock as it usually costs the same but is a bit better.

Edit: Oops, I'm talking about road bikes.

which would be a better choice than a mtb for road use.. :o

I've had a carrera vengeance for the last 2 years, Paid £250 for it. For the money it's been a great bike. Got me to work and back each day, 10 miles along with evening and weekend riding. Like I said for the money it has been great

Id advise against a carrera tbh , having had one and had nothing but issues with it,i ended buying a GT in the wiggle sales which was just 100 quid dearer, the difference is like night and day
