90's internet vs modern internet

these days all day long. I use the internet to play games. that is simply better these days.

As fewer people used it, there certainly seemed to be more of a sense of community and fewer trolls.

What I don't like about modern day internet is how memes are now commonplace to the point where people who have no interest in the internet beyond social networking and have no inkling of geekiness within them, still spout memes off ad-nuaseam as it's the cool thing to do now.

9hrs to download 50mb half-life 1 demo, high pings on multiplayer Quake 2 and Unreal Tournament, unable to make phonecalls while browsing....all on 56k. I don’t miss those days in the 90’s for internet but I do miss the chatrooms, especially Trouble Chat, Yahoo Chat and Teenchat, until they go shut down for obvious reasons :(

The most annoying thing really.

Whenever I hear LOL, it makes me want to slap them and tell them "YOU ARE WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE SPECIES!"

Even worse is LMFAO, why...JUST WHY! :(

Why are you using  and :( then pretty much the same thing? Or at least I treat them as they are - ie expressions of something that can't really be conveyed in normal text.

Oh and old internet by far - remember the joys of span-relay and going are we really on NASA's computers and where a shell escape set you back as root in Unix. Berkeley you may want to look at this.

The world of crappy websites, awful chat rooms, slow porn and dreadful speeds.... No thanks, I like the world of here and now.

Ahh nostalgia.

Prestel - Micronet 800. The Midnight Micronetters Club (TMMC) and the 30 page chat system where new messages overwrote the old ones.

Our TMMC Tour around the country in a rented campervan to meet members.

Fantastic.

My point is you say you don't like people using "LOL" and then use  etc. I was saying I see them as the same thing - a means of conveying something that the words of a post don't necessarily carry. That's all.

I'm talking about people using memes in voice-based conversations.

I think someone is taking the internet too seriously. :p

Despite the vast size of the internet now, I actually now only use a very small amount of it compared to what I used to.

My bookmarks list in the late 90's early 2000's was 70 to 80 odd websites I would use "regularly", now I have 14, of which I only use about 6.

So much content, so little of it of any use.

ahh Gopher, loved it!
90s was better, less competitive, less commercial. It may have been slow and looked like **** but the level of creativity was far higher than it will ever be again.

Same here actually, mainly shopping, wiki, news and here, sometimes FB.
