The only similar forums that are roughly the same or smaller in size that i know of are competitors. If you go to the next 'step up' with things like AVForums then for me at least the 'community spirit' is lost, and if you run into the same person often enough to start to get to know them then odds are they're already a 'forum celebrity'. Besides, i don't think the whole standard forum layout lends itself well to that many people. Things are lost too easily.
I know a lot of people have gripes with it, some quite rightly so, but the main option that springs to mind for me is Reddit. We have quite a similar demographic (albeit Reddit is a lot more liberal), you'll certainly find the range of subjects and if you use the smaller subreddits then you will get a community feel to it. Downsides? Well, it isn't a forum for starters. The upvote/downvote system is theoretically (and... somewhat practically) a good way to sort through good and bad content, but it doesn't lend itself too well to long discussions, especially on front page submissions.
