Virgin Media Discussion Thread

It's 9.45pm and yet again, pings in the 40's and not always reaching 60Mb download speeds. This has become a regular occurrence and only really settles down very late at night. Never used to be like this, should I call VM up again?

edit: hmm, scratch that. Now it's ok. And wtf, I just got 75Mb/s at http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/  It's only meant to be a 60Mb connection, lol.

I said supposed and it's not just this channel, I've tried 3 others and the results are dire. I've reset the router 3 times and it's still embarassingly crap. The superhub hates my laptops inbuilt wireless adapter so I had to try an old Netgear one I had and that worked okay but now it's absolutey dog **** again. The amount of people that have problems with SuperHubs is ridiculous how can Virgin Media charge you that much money and then give you a product that is not fit for purpose. Do they not test these things out? I live in a pretty small 3 bed house and the range is absolutely dire.

Sometimes I wish I was back on my ****** ADSL, I got 40 ping and 3.5Mb/s down but at least it was consistent! Virgin cable is probably the most inconsistent product I have ever seen. And it's all let down by equipment, a lot of peoples problems are solved by going modem mode with a better router. Sure Virgin Media can't afford to give out top of the range routers for free but it's not even like it's our product, it's theirs. They should invest more money into their equipment because frankly it's disgusting.

I didn't say the superhub was good. I was just stating that a congestion free channel isn't always the best. There could be reasons why others are not using them

First they said £46 a month and I said..GOODBYE..
So they gave me a Samsung V+ box HD and the rest for £37 also my 100Mb is not the free upgrade version.

And just for people that are on 100\10Mb VM will have the codes in their system by the end of the month.
So you can just call and they should give you the 120Mb freebie there and then :)

It is the free upgrade version. I had my free upgrade from 50mbps to 100mbps and i get 10mbps upload. They just keyed it on at 10mbps upload at the time of the call. everyone on 100mbps pays 50mbps price no matter whether you have 5mbps upload or 10mbps upload

Ok, idiot question!

Can the old modem cope with 100meg?
If so can I swap it back? If I do would I be back on the origional UBR as before.

Yeah I know. Idiot question!!

Not an idiot question. The old modem can cope with 100mbps and 120mbps. But there is no guarantee which UBR it will go onto.

Just monitor your pings throughout the day and see what they are like

Anyone have any idea why the hell I'm getting 13mb/s when I'm promised 60mb/s? It's been like it for a good month now, I can't download anything faster than 400kb/s, despite the fact that when I first got it I was downloading at 7-8mb/s...

Is this what Virgin do? Sneakily take your money for an 'upgrade' and then revert you back to your old speeds afterwards? Actually no, beforehand I atleast downloaded things at 1mb/s, not ****ing 400kb/s. Gonna ring em up tommorow and see what's going on. This is not ****ing acceptable.

****'s.

Also, If I'm on the 60mb/s package, can I get a free upgrade to 100/120mb/s?

I never said you said the superhub was good. You've assumed something twice now. I am ranting, it's not aimed at you or anyone in particular, the only part that was aimed at you was the channel part and that's why I quoted you. I'll reiterate on that part too, I never said the least congested was the best. I said the 'supposed' best.

No idea but your not alone with crap speeds. I haven't seen any official response to the whole mess.

They've been **** since day one compared to others, sadly though they are the best mbps per £ at the moment, just extremely dodgey and rarely work at the promised speeds.

They've gone full AMD mode. :D

I've been looking for more speed test sites for the hell of it. Anyone tried this one? I know it's for BT but it seems to work the same as others. Would you say it's accurate? http://www.speedtester.bt.com/

'Above 24Mbps(beta)'. Giving me a consistent 66, but not sure how accurate it is. That's in line with the BBMax site which gives me similar speeds and higher, whereas thinkbroadband is often lower around 57Mb and speedtest net fluctuates around 59 to 62Mb.

Dude the now 100Mb free version was not out when I got my deal so how can you say that?

Also my area will not get the free upgrade for 8 months but I will get the 120Mb upgrade in about a months time.
I think you neeed to read the whole thread....

Cool. I've been reading a few posts about people switching back to the old modem and it sorting their issues out.

Do I need to reactivate the modem or should it work straight away?

It makes no difference when you got your 100mbps or how long it it is until your area is upgraded. All 100mbps customers pay 50mbps prices. Also vm were offering pre doubled speeds before they announced about the double speeds.

Others have confirmed this also. You could try reading the whole thread too if you like

Can anyone suggest what I should do in this situation?

I've been a returning virgin customer for less than a week and already I'm wishing I'd gone with another provider.

Installation was started last Wednesday (15/08) after a 3 week waiting period, but the engineers discovered that the cables by our house weren’t connected to the exchange (the manager also said they'd done the house next door and had the exact same problem). He said they couldn't do it that day (though my girlfriend overheard one complaining he'd have to stay late if they did it that day), and said they'd call back the next morning to rearrange installation.

They never did so I called up to find out what was happening in the evening. I was promised another call back when someone had looked into it.

They never did so I called back on Friday, re-explained my problem and the guy booked an engineer visit for the Monday. On Monday, the engineer arrived, and instantly realised that he couldn't do anything as it was an external problem (which I had told the guy on Friday).

He promised to get someone to call back the next morning and sort it out. Once again no one called so I had to call yet again this afternoon to follow it up and finally got somewhere with them actually realising that it was an external fault and they rearranged for installation on the 6th of September. I've been offered money off the installation and next month’s services for free as a result, but personally am not at all happy about having to wait a further 16 days to get it sorted and am just thinking about jacking it all in and continuing to use my mobile phones 4G tether.

I've wasted a ton of time messing about with this and just want to get my services connected.

If I switched to another provided such as BT I'm worried I'd just go through this song and dance all over again.

Hi Rhodri,

I had a similar problem when I first went with them, was a nightmare couple of months.

I then looked up one of the heads of customer care on linkedin, Mark Davidson I think, and sent him an email listing every broken promise/no callback/outright lied to...etc and my general disgust at how a company like virgin was messing around...

anyhow, everything was sorted within a couple of days, senior engys couldnt do enough to make sure I was happy and ended up getting a few months free plus a few other bits, long term contract rate without agreeing any long period...

I am happy with them, I do have issues now and then but after a little moan they do get sorted and I get compensated with a £20 here and there.

BT have the same issues, but quite often they wont give you any freebies for any inconvenience.

good luck with it
