I work with chat rooms on a gambling site (bingo, slots, casino) and can tell you they are still popular.
People like to chat. Around 20-30% of all our members use the chat facility on site, and we do have rules in there that are enforced including no sharing of personal information and the fact it's not a dating site.
We can have up to around 400 people in a single room. The only issue I've found is the amount of bull**** that you have to wade through.
One person claiming the deposited and wagered £10k in day, more like £50. Then there is the one upmanship. You think it's bad on here with the grammar nazi's and other people that like to try and give themselves some feeling on self worth but when you have people competing to who has had the worst cancer or illness, or who's lost the most family members you realise the sad state people can get in.
We deal with a lot of desperation and begging as well, but that's more of the fact the sites are gambling than chat rooms.
