Alienware m18x or m17x r4?

I got one in my basket but it was a 660. It was my first time looking at the R4 so I didn't know what to look for and just choose randomly but now I've seen it I think I could get a 7970.

I'm not looking to buy one but I can help if others are struggling to get one. :)

I had my brother on it too, i noticed the one above had a Nvidia card but that was only around £700 so i clicked on the one below and got lucky :)

This is my 8th day so pretty pleased and its a great spec, just need to order a SSD drive

Sam you evil boy, I almost had that 7970m in my basket but you must have beat me with the security code as when I entered it the laptop was gone

Sorry (im not) :D Keep trying you will get one !!

Few questions for Mark / anyone with a Mx17

1. Can you confirm that there is space for 2 x sata drives (i want to keep the 500GB for storage but have a 128GB SSD as my boot drive)

2. What SSD drive would you go for, http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-153-SA&groupid=1657&catid=2101&subcat=2103 or http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-076-OC&groupid=1657&catid=2101&subcat=2103 I want to spend as little as possible on this

3. Will it come with a Windows 7 disc so i can reload onto the SSD?. We have a HDD clone machine at work, could i clone from the sata drive onto the SSD drive?

Cheers

Sam

1. yes it has 2 hdd bays plus I think it has a msata slot
2. This is personal preference but you cannot go wrong with either the crucial m4 or samsung 830
3. No it won't come with a W7 disc. you can burn discs from alienrespawn but I always download a copy of W7HP and do a fresh install as Dell usually have the laptops set as RAID in BIOS and I prefer AHCI for SSD

Oh and to be fair, I am in no rush as I have plenty of machines, I just fancied having a play with the 7970m. I set one up for a friend recently and it seemed to be pretty damn quick although there are enduro issues still (fortunately you can turn the intel card off)

Tempted to get the larger drive as I filled up my 128gb on my XPS v quickly however there does not seem any point if I’m going to have a secondary 500gb drive for photos / music etc

Anyone recommend a decent laptop case for one of these?

The Mobile Edge Alienware Orion M17x Messenger is very nice however im not paying £86 for it !!

Sam

I have a belkin slim 17" backpack and its lovely if you just want the machine, documents and maybe a change of clothes.

I also recommend the M4 drives, i've gone from 64gb to 128gb (x2) to 256GB to 256GB msata and all have been flawless in operation.

Thanks Meaker ill order an M4 today, any reason why i should get a 256mb over a 128mb which i might be missing?.

If you're getting a 7mm ssd then why not get the samsung? Better than the M4, you get cashback currently too!

Oh and personally I think you'll struggle to get windows on the 256mb, let alone the 128mb ;) :p

I use that same backpack and love it. m17x fits great

I shall get one ordered :)

Whats the thoughts on 8GB ram, worth upgrading to 16GB or is that just over kill

It's worth it if you will ever need it especially because the price is so cheap right now and in the future it will cost much more.

If your motherboard has four memory slots you can even buy two packs of 2 x 8GB DDR3 SODIMM 1600MHz for only ~£120 (£59.99 * 2) and in the future that price is likely to go back to £400+.

Not that you would need 32GB but if you did it's easily affordable. :)

The cost of 16GB used to be £200+ and eventually it'll go back up. That is what happens in this industry and often there is no warning of it occurring.

It could get cheaper still but if you want to buy now I would just do it.

Also if you look around you will see most places sell the top branded memory and it costs twice as much as the cheaper brands. It's not like the cheaper brands are using inferior chips. The memory chips are very cheap right now but it won't last. :)
