If I use Noctua NH-D14 do i need low profile ram etc

Im getting my new build & want people who have used them to give me there thoughts please!

my build is:
Intel Core i7 3770 3.4GHz (to be overclocked)
Asus P8Z77-V LX Socket 1155
Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600Mhz
Seagate 2TB Barracuda Internal Hard Drive
256gb ssd drive
Pci soundcard

Im thinking of getting a XFX Radeon HD 6870 GPU

I still havent picked my case + psu

Thanks for any relpys

if you choose the noctua then yes youll need low profile memory,
why not a 7850 for graphic card? i have the noctua d14 with sb chip and the fans are a bit too noisy imo, they arnt pwm controlled but you can add in the noise reduction wires or switch the fans ect

im running 8gb samsung green memory but vengeance lp memory would work,or if you went for sealed watercolled unit your memory wouldnt need to be low profile

Phanteks PH-TC14PE is better than Noctua NH-D14

Yes, you'll need low profile RAM

Intel Core i7 3770 3.4GHz (to be overclocked)
You should go for the i7 3770K

Asus P8Z77-V LX Socket 1155
Go for Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard currently on sale for £79.99

Im thinking of getting a XFX Radeon HD 6870 GPU
HD 7850 will be better than the HD 6870

Thanks wazza300,

That card is around £50 more & im trying to keep the cost down!

Thanks again!

Those water coolers will be noisier and end up more expensive than a top end air cooler by the time you've replaced the fans (and you will want to replace the fans :)).

Personally, I can recommend the K2 for great performance and lack of of noise (has PWM fans too).
If you want the all out quietest, go for the Silver Arrow SB-E (Has PWM fans).
If you want the best performer vying with the SB-E, it's the Phanteks by around 1-3C or more depending on which review you read (Has a PWM adapter)
D14 2011 is probably about the same as the K2.

You'll need low profile RAM to use the SB-E/Phanteks as they use 140mm fans (although you could use those fans at middle and rear instead).
K2/D14 use 120mm front fans and will clear most RAM as long it doesn't have stupidly tall heat spreaders. Get lo-pro anyway.

I hope that helps more than just 'Buy Phanteks' :)

Also, you'll definitely want the 'K' version of that chip if you want to properly overclock and therefore make proper use of any of the above mentioned coolers.

save abit more for the 7850,its worth every penny,no good throwing money at older tech, but if your really tight on budget i suppose a 6870 paired with lucid virtu mvp would be enough

best thing about 7850 are the much lower power draw and silent fans at load, plus cooler temps

Yes, you'll need low profile RAM ok!

You should go for the i7 3770K I will do now

HD 7850 will be better than the HD 6870
Im not a big gamer yet but want something that will do me what you think?

Thanks again Phusion!

If the Noctua will fit then so should the Phanteck.

Gigabyte boards are generally recommended here due to their better warranty and UK support. The gigabyte board seems to have more features as well, 5.1 audio and more USB 3 connectors on the back panel.

Nothing agiainst Hono's (hope you don't mind the nick name :)) Spec, i just don't like the look of the R3 in white. That red LED makes it look like an albino rabbit. A bit creepy.

Otherwise hono's spec is great, Fractal Arc Midi would be my choice.

It's all good bud. You know when you've been Hono'd ;)

It's a no brainer really. The 7850 has more VRAM aswell, there is a £140 7850 but it only has 1GB of VRAM. You want 2GB to be looking forwards. I suggested the MSI 7850 as it's clocked well and includes games and has a 3 year warranty, you can OC these GPUs very well

Are you going to play games on this build?
If not, you don't need a 7850/6870 for this build unless your software can use the discrete gpu to accelerate your music software/production.
Save the money and spend it on something else and just use the built in graphics.
