My niece is 6 and I have no idea what to get her. She's into dolls, pretending to be a teacher, playing a bit of Nintendo Wii. Was thinking of getting her a 3DS but I want to encourage her creative/learning side.

Any ideas?

personally i think consoles are a present that need to come with a parents blessing, so if you go down the 3DS route check the parents are into it. I wouldn't want someone deciding when my kids have their own games machine (that they don't need me to fire up for them)

dependant on budget i would strongly consider a 2nd hand ipad (1st gen) so much flexibility, from games to books, films to tv episodes. My 4 1/2 year old loves hers, and makes many other things such as travelling long journeys much easier to handle

Get her a play oven like this so she can practice for later life when she's not allowed out of the kitchen.

Seriously though joking aside don't get her a Nintendo 3DS or console. All the parents I know who have bought their sons/daughters a console hate it. Buy her a small bicycle with stabalisers. She can take it off when she's older. :)

Edit: Lego is awesome. Kids love the stuff.

Lego sounds good, can someone recommend a set? She's into princesses and Disney

EDIT: The Lego Friends set looks good.

Thats the issue with parenting these days, its easy to buy your kid a console or tablet and just forget about them for most of the day, when thats not how it should be.

Don't go the video game route. Getting kids into video games is probably the worst thing you can do in all honesty.

Something outgoing like a scooter is a nice idea, a few posts above.

An iPad? For a 4 1/2 year old?

Really?
Yes, mainly we use it for films on longer car journeys, but its also good for interactive books, learning games that help with number, colour, letter recognition etc, and a lot of drawing even though she has hundreds of colour books etc. Its not just used for games, infact probably games are the least used function.

Your post assumes a lot. Your assuming that the ipad is just given to the child and the child ignored, rather than being used as a tool to aid in development and ealry years learning.

When you have a source such as an ipad it means that you can vary the activities quickly and easily and help keep learning interesting and varied. On top of this you have the added flexibility of the film and video play back functions.

How do you think kids used to learn, they werent just given books and told to get on with it, the same is true now except the ipad has replaced the book in this example. There is still 1 to 1 time, this is required with all children, wether the learning is from book and paper or from an ipad. Your also assuming that the child has some how lost access to everything else! and is left to fend for herself all day and night.

I buy presents for my niece and nephew based on how annoying for their parents they would be. For instance, my nephew's 7 next month, so he's getting an electrically operated, belt fed, fully automatic Nerf machine gun. :D

Note; His uncle may or may not spend significant amounts of time "testing it" for him.
