*** The official Sony Xperia S thread ***

Out of curiosity, which sony widgets were you wanting to use?

You could try an alternative album program. Have a look on the market.

Im annoyed that my bootloader is locked and there seems to be nothing to do about it. I guess I should be happy to be able to root at least. But not being able to try out CM 9 and 10 is a bit annoying ;)

It was mainly the tools one, for toggling wifi, backlight, data etc. But I was recommended a great replacement for it that is near identical and great to use.

Didn't think of an alternative album, will look into it!

New firmware out. Some reported benefits:

Faster "Fast Capture"
No bluetooth stutter
faster widget drawer loading
Onavo Extend work
Phone is butter smooth (More and more than the S3)

Have been using it since yesterday afternoon and it is definitely a bit smoother and quicker.
Dont use bluetooth, but the fast camera from screen off is also a bit quicker.

My deepsleep bug when wifi is off still seems to be there, but apart from that its a nice little update :)

If i've rooted my phone can I update the firmware via PC companion? I did the root method of going back to gingerbread then running a .bat, then flashing ICS and running another .bat.

Also, annoyingly I dropped my phone on the road while getting in a car, no marks except a scratch over the front camera of all places!! :( Still got that cover on it though so I guess I could remove that and it would be fine underneath..

Cheers.

Not available yet for me via PC Companion, will wait patiently :-)

That's cute ;)
But either way, it is a very nice smooth update. I'm actually rather impressed with it performance wise. Seems a bit more focused and less hesitant about doing things. Though it makes me wonder how jelly bean would feel on this device ;)

There were lots of people talking about removing the pre-installed screen protector. So you could do that. Personally before I did that I would buy another normal screen projector to stick over the glass. ;)

I used this method and downloaded and flashed the rom with Flashtool.
Was rather painless http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1856287

Thanks!

Yeah I actually asked about this a while ago due to some scratches. Seems odd to have a screen protector you can't replace properly?

I keep meaning to buy a replacement protector. I bought one when I got it and wasted it after trying to put it on and failing.. Probably due to it already having one.. Did the same with the one that comes with the phone.

Does Sony not sell replacements?

Sony Mobile’s IFA 2012 press conference happening now I think. All ears are waiting for an official 4.1 announcement. I wonder if the AOSP team will beat Sony to 4.1?

I dont know if they do their own replacements.
As far as I know the one installed is to keep the screen from shattering and obviously doing a bit of scratch protection as well. I actually put on a screen projector that came with my phone. So now it seems I have two on :P But it doesn't feel odd or unresponsive so Im happy with ;)

*Edit - Here's an XDA post linking to some official ones. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762976
According to a few people, you are meant to put the included screen protector over the shatter proof one. Though in typical XDA fashion there are people freaking out about why you'd want to have 2 screen protectors installed and we should all remove them all.. XDA annoys me sometimes :P

If they beat Sony too it, firstly shame on Sony, and secondly we'd probably be waiting a long time :P

Here is an interesting take on why they might being trying to add other devices to AOSP.
A few NSFW words in there too ;)

Sony aren't exactly quick with their updates (1.6>2.XX took a year, GB>ICS took a good few months despite claims of 'very shortly after release' of the XS). The V and T are confirmed for the JB update:

Sony Mobile’s new handsets announced today – the Xperia T, Xperia V and Xperia J – will be released with Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. Sony also confirmed that at least the 4.6-inch Xperia T and 4.3-inch Xperia V will be updated to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean “following launch”. No specific timing was given, although Sony said that detailed timing will follow.

Nice and vague. No news on earlier 2012 models.

Well it wasn't clear when I bought it, unless I missed some instructions in the box telling me to put the screen protectors on? I assumed they were replacement ones once i'd realised it already had one on it.

What a pain. My front camera is unusable unless I want giant blurs over it. I suppose I could look into it, i'll snoop about on those forums.

^ at the time I didnt notice there was a preinstalled on. In your case I would just remove it and then stick on another screen protector of some sort. There is a thread on XDA where lots of people are happy with their screen protector-less screen

Yeah I took a look. I want to make sure I get a good screen protector.. Any recommendations? Surely they won't do the same job as the shatter protector one?

Plus the stress of attempting to put the provided one on my phone was unreal. Couldn't get it on clean. Even though I had two! Messed them both up.

Initial reaction to the new update is the phone is on steroids.

Perhaps it is just because my internet is now performing as it should have done anyway, but suitable impressed.

I am now switching back to my initial assessment of ICS on this phone. One of the bugs is starting to get annoying; the music stutters when ever I do something else and if I send a text it will momentarily sound like the bass is turned down and switch to the speaker phone! Very annoying and embarrassing at work.

I conquered my fear and took the ICS plunge.

Installed.
Wiped the phone.
Put all my apps and contacts back.
Running like an absolute dream. :) :) :)

I must say that running the new firmware 6.1.A.2.45 and the beta version of Apex launcher, that this phone is really flying along now :)
