Hi all

I've recently acquired one of these lovely monitors but i've been struggling to achieve 120hz at 1080p resolution. The option is available in nvidia settings allowing me to select 1920x1080 with a refresh rate of 60hz/100hz/120hz, but anything above 60hz at this resolution loses clarity and is all pixelated.

Naturally I've been doing some reading and realise that I didn't have a dual link dvi cable (I think this monitor usually comes with the required cable, but I got it 2nd hand and didnt receive one), so I just hooked it up with the dvi cable used with my Dell u2311h. Anyway, I bought a cheap and nasty 5M DVI-D Dual Link from the bay which has the full array of pins but I am still experiencing the same problem.

Im using a MSI GTX460 Hawk which has 2x dvi dual link ports (well the dual link cable fits into both, so I assume both ports are capable of outputting a dual link signal? regardless same issue on both ports).

So can anybody offer suggestions on the root of the problem please?

-Have I bought a crap cable? I assumed a dual link cable was capable of exactly that despite its quality.

-Maybe I've just ended up with a dud cable? although it is working and still displays at 1080p just not properly at 100hz/120hz

-Is there a setting i've overlooked somewhere? maybe in the drivers (which I have updated to the most recent version)

-I read one forum post somewhere just from google searching that explicitly stated something along the lines of 120hz 1080p DVI-D ports on anything from 5 series Nvidia cards and above (might be irrelevant) but did make me consider whether my 4 series GTX460 is capable of achieving 120hz at 1080p.

-I've received a faulty monitor?

thanks in advance

I can help a bit.

My old 480 had no issues with 1080p @120Hz to the exact same screen using the supplied Samsung cable.

No issues again using the supplied cable from my 670.

Sounds like a dodge cable / interface on the screen to me. Can you borrow another cable off someone?

Yup will be the cable most likely. Had the same issue and was racking my brains for days why it wouldnt work.

Got the correct cable and its working fine on all 3 screens now.

Orginally used duel 460's with it as well so it does work.

Resolutions over 1920x1200 (such as 2560x1440 on your Dell u2711) have pretty much the same cable demands as 120Hz 1920x1080 screens. That is - either dual-link DVI or Displayport.

So if you were running the Dell on it's native resolution that cable was dual-link if you weren't, then shame on you! 5m is fairly long btw, that combined with 'cheap' and 'the bay' raises questions as to whether the cable will do.

Oops I meant dell u2311h not 2711h!

Ok I'll buy another dvi-d dual link cable. Do you think the OCUK value 2m cable will be ok?

The reason I bought a 5m cable was I initially bought this monitor to watch films and stuff from my bed, and so needed a longer cable. i realise the longer the cable the higher degradation of the signal so yes this might be a contributing factor to the problem.

It's setup at my pc at the moment while I test the features etc but having tried games at very low resolutions at 120hz I don't think I could go back to 60hz! So wanting to get 120hz at 1080p.

Thanks

If OcUK sell a Dual link DVI cable (value or not) it should work as per the DVI-D spec! If it does not work return it for a refund.

In this instance you "could" use DSR to your benefit, but IMO thats a rip off for the company involved if you return a perfectly good item you have used for testing for no good reason.

yep i bought the ocuk 2m dual link DVI cable and it has fixed the problem, i now get 120hz at 1080p! thanks all
