Corsair seems to have better write speeds, however a firmware update increases the write speed of the M4 to 550MB/s, is this true?

So which would you recommend and why?

No sata 3 here though (only sata 2), how much of difference will that make?

The m4 uses better synchronous nand memory, not sure on the write speeds? Don't you mean read speeds?

You'll see around 250mb read/write on sata2

Corsair Force 3 is listed as 550MB/s read and 510MB/s write

M4 is listed as 550MB/s read and 220MB/s write

But there's a note on the M4 listing saying firmware update increases speed to 550MB/s but doesn't specify read or write.

Why is there such a big difference in write speeds?

It means read for the m4,its just the way the sandforce drives handle compressionable data, the m4 is just as fast, the read speeds are the most important

I've got both a M4 and a Force GT, real world use, there's not really a lot of difference between them.

not sure if you would notice any speed difference and a lot of people would say the m4 is better than the force 3. i have 2 force 3's in raid 0 and with. the garbage collection they are kept running fast. i can only recommend going on my experience with customer after sales service. corsairs service is second to none period. i bricked my first force 3 while updating the firmware which was obviously my fault but corsair still sent me a new drive at no cost.you pays your money and get what you pay for
