Toyo T1R Proxes 195-50-15 tyres £29.89 + £2.99 p+p @CamSkill

Slightly off topic but for those who order tyres from camskill do you just find a friendly local tyre place that is willing to fit them?

I'm running Volk TE37's, the car is set up well, the only change I made was from Eagle F1's to T1R's, and the car has gone from giving me loads of confidence to having very little and having to watch myself a lot more, feeling it all come unstuck far earlier when pressing on.

I think you're going for grip over fun... the T1Rs are the perfect balance of enough grip, but still fun with stock power... that's why they're rated so highly.

If you want limitless grip... get cut slicks :p

MX5s aren't supposed to just grip and grip... they're designed for slidey fun!

I want early morning country road hoon fun chasing down trying to keep up with bigger boys, I do not want the back end stepping out on a roundabout at speed for seemingly no reason.

Might help if you learn when and how to apply power :p

My eagle F1's allowed me to carry far more speed and with much more confidence.

Clearly the tyres then! :\

They're hardly top performance tyres, what were you expecting for the price? R888s?

The way idiots raved about them, I was expecting top performance tyres, comparatively so with the Eagle F1. It is now clear to me that what happens is people with linglongs get them, think the step up is amazing, then recommend them without really knowing how good tyres can actually be. They are a budget tyre and as so, are god awful, stay well clear.

That's not true hurf... They're perfect for MX5s, pug 205s and similar.

You don't like it sliding around, fair enough... A lot of others do... They give just the right amount of grip and slip to have fun in a naturally aspirated version.

That's why people race about them... As Sigma and I have said... It sounds like you could do with a bit of driver training... Not meaning to be rude or anything, but if you really have them stepping out at times you don't expect and your car really is setup properly... It must be your lack of driving experience. Probably as simple as putting the power down just a bit too early.

I had T1Rs on my 220bhp 'charged car and it didn't once step out of line unexpectedly. In fact, I loved them on that car.

As for the Eagle F1s, the way they tramline MX5s is rather annoying.

I think the problem here is your expectation, not the tyres. Perhaps you should do a bit more research next time.

They're not bad tyres at all, it is possible to drive perfectly well on them (depending on the car, as with most tyres).

I've found T1-Rs to be pretty good. Quieter, smoother, a lot of grip even in the wet and so far, they aren't wearing too badly either. For comparison, the car was shod with RE040s on the rear and two different tyres on the front when I bought it (cant remember the brands, but they didn't perform horrendously). I probably don't drive the car as hard as hurf does, but I've only ever once experienced the back stepping out on a roundabout - and that was in the wet, with DSC off, and I was 'playing' if I'm honest.

The soft sidewalls can be felt a little sometimes, and I've noticed a drop in fuel efficiency - although this could be that since having the tyres fitted and rebalanced last August, the car has felt a lot smoother with less vibration so I might just be tending to drive faster on the motorway.

In general, I'm pleased with the tyres for the price, but I'm aware there are probably better choices out there.

For comparison, perhaps we should be posting our cars and the tyres sizes along with out experiences? My MX5 NC is on 205/45/17.

T1-R's go from being the top dog to 'ok' for the money to 'great for the money' to 'exactly what a car needs' to 'cars with a certain weight'.

They're bobbins tyres, as has been pointed out, you can get Conti Sport 3's for a few quid more which are better than the Toyo's even at overall cost due to the improved wear rate.

I had 195/50/15 on my DC2 which is the same weight as an MX5 and like the MX5 has small rubber to give it that lively feeling, but it failed miserably at any provocation. So I bought Hankook RS2's for it, they have one of the stiffest side walls going, a full 8mm tread and are a 'road going track tyre' so it needs to warm up before it has any grip. Even when cold they offer far more grip than the T1-R's ever did, and they only cost me £60 a corner.

Anyone got any tyre reviews where the T1-R shines? Preferably one within the last ten years :D

I don't recall anyone on here suggesting that they're the best tyres that you could ever fit to a DC2.

Specific people here isn't the point, it's reverberated around the internet (like in this thread) that they're some sort of wonder rubber. My girlfriend disagrees.

So you're using your experience of driving one (?) car with them on to denounce everyone else who says they're alright?

Having a quick browse of the thread I can see one person who claims they're awesome, pretty much everyone else says that they're pretty good for what they are.

Perhaps you shouldn't take everything written on the Internet as being the absolute truth?

You put a tyre with a soft tyre wall on a car that's (afaik) known to prefer stiffer tyre walls and you're surprised that they felt ****? Next you'll be saying that they're not as good as Eagle F1s :p

I don't think anyone has made out they are "wonder rubber", just that they are very good for the price they are sold at. My own (and many other people's) experiences seem to back this up; why are they any less valid than your own experience?

I've said this before but I've seen a lot of scoffing at the T1R on this forum. You may have had bad experiences with them, which is fine, but to describe them as completely rubbish because of that is a bit unfair, especially in the face of overwhelming opinions that they offer good performance for the money, opinions which then get disregarded as idiotic or misguided.

Driven two different MX5's with them on and a Clio.

That's the point I was getting at?

I had them as they were free, and I was told that they suit light cars (my cars very light), I was told to check my pressure and suspension (just had new OEM shocks, springs and bushes all round) and they were still pap. I've never advocated them or expected them to be 'good' I just needed rid the balding ones on it and they came up from an MX5 owner who said they were ****.

I have no issues with the tyre for a shopping trolley, but advocating they're gods gift to car owners is erroneous. There's better rubber out there in small sizes PE2's CSC3's and in bigger sizes Eagles, CSC3's that will cost a bit more and wear far better offering better value and characteristics for the owner. The advocater in this seems to keep moving the goal posts on what makes them so great and there's an owner of the same car in this thread saying they're rubbish too.

Anyone got any proper reviews of these tyres?

At £30/corner... They can't be beat and Csc3s aren't available in 195/50/15 from what I've been able to fis - so muffin, the comparison is redundant.

DC2s are heavier than MX5s too...

Go to different tyre sizes and there are definitely better tyres for the same money... But not 195/50/15 on an MX5... You have to pay double to get better... Sometimes worth it sure... I'll be sticking better rubber on mine when I have the power mods sorted... But for n/a fun in an MX5 (MK 1 - 2.5... Not 3+) they're spot on.
