A US official has been killed and others wounded after militiamen stormed the US consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi, security officials say.

It is believed the protest was held over a US-produced film that is said to be insulting to the Prophet Muhammad.

The building is said to have burnt down after being set alight by protesters. It is thought nobody was in the consulate at the time.

Protests have also been held at the US embassy in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

Witnesses say the protest in Benghazi prompted a confrontation between government security forces and an armed militia known as the Ansar al-Sharia brigade, the BBC's Rana Jawad in Tripoli reports.

"One American staff member has died and a number have been injured in the clashes," Abdel-Monem Al-Hurr, spokesman for Libya's Supreme Security Committee, told Reuters news agency.

The identity of the US official killed is not yet known.

The US said it condemned the attack "in the strongest terms" and was working with Libyan security forces to secure the compound, a statement by US state department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

The film that sparked the demonstration is said to have been produced by some Egyptian Copt expatriates. A trailer of it has appeared on YouTube in Arabic.

Watch the Republicans' reaction to this.

Who cares what they think? If you do, I am afraid that is the wrong answer.

What i find hilarious however is that this is almost exactly comparable, though not entirely to manning releasing information about the US.

I draw this rather lax comparison because, they both apparently have the same effects, but this particular (stupid) way (this spiteful christian) has appreciable returns, while the former is nothing more than conjecture from morons who like stating their vastly overrated opinions.

Now I almost find it laughable that people (conservative muslims shall we say?), find such a thing offensive in the first place, not only does it play into the hands of the instigator and in an awful sense the current stigma against the muslim faith/people that follow it, but it also disrepesects the prophet himself to act in such a vengeful way.

Why would you burn down a totally unrelated organisations building anyway? It wasn't even the people responsible for whatever it was they didnt like!

Well no one likes the US in their country. They have been known for corruption and control. Cant blame them tbh. Anyways, who cares? its their problem not ours. Let the yanks deal with it.

When you are killing people for making a video rationality isn't really high on your list of traits.

Hold on, you think it's perfectly fine that a probably innocent person was killed because of a film?

Am I the only one that finds that to be slightly off?

But he isn't innocent, he is a representative of the zionist supporting, great satan, evil empire that is the US. He was probably wearing jackboots and a NWO pin when the brave revolutionaries killed him in the name of peace, justice and freedom.

Such a tolerant and peaceful faith...

Do we have to do this each time an individual does something wrong in the name of islam?:(

Why not blame the individuals who commited the murder instead of 100's of millions of peace loving people the world over?

Also have a look at The International Red Cross and Red Cresent.

Agreed, religion of peace.

you forgot to mention he was cooking their children at the time :p

Wordy,
The trouble is it's not individuals doing it. It's a large group. In separate locations. At separate times. All in the name of their religion.

It's not exactly an isolated incident or a rare occurance is it?

I think any death is bad and violence is never the answer. But he should have known the controversy and the consequences of such a film to be released. We all know how touche people are when it comes to religion and when people spread "lies", negative or bias perspective on a particular faith. Its just a small group of religious nutjobs, lets not do the typical GD behaviour and label everyone in that religion as bad.

how quickly they forget...

first the west liberates them, then acting under the umbrella of freedom which we have helped provide they atack their liberators...

brilliant. :confused::mad::mad::confused:
