iPhone 5 Detail Today

Yes but the Iphone 5 now has :

Same size increase in screen size ( 0.5 inches , Same PPI as the S3 )
A much more powerful Processor then the 4S and possibly S3
Improvements made to this camera in both software and hardware

It has a new design , it may not be completely different but it is still different from the 4S cosmetically as well as size , thinness and weight.

Improved battery life over the 4S
New OS and new software / apps
Now has New wifi 5ghz , LTE , new microphones , headphones , connectors
As far as i can tell there are just as many changes if not more then the S2 to S3 jump.

Screen size is 2 years out of date.
Processor upgrade a waste of time, the phone is strangled by iOS6 that a 4 or 4s can run, so its capacity isn't going to get used.
iOS6 was a disappointment when announced, its very light on new features
So they made it a bit thinner and lighter by dumping the glass BFD.
Connector is hardly a "good" upgrade for the customer, the adapter to re-use your old accessories is $29, so probably £30 here.
LTE a waste of time, its exclusive to Everything Everywhere until 2014, will be expensive and more than likely have iffy coverage (like HSDPA but worse).

Other than bragging rights there is little point getting a 5 over a 4s.

Also as far as the S3 goes it added a stack of software features like S Beam, smart stay, share shot, a whole bunch of gesture controls, smart alert etc

Each on their own are only small things but added together they do make an impact (imho).

Is it really a set back though? The whole intention of Retina is that its so sharp you cant see the inidivdual pixels anyway. Would you actually see the difference if it went up to 720p?

Well its for video, if you have a 720p vid (standard now) am I right in thinking it will scale it down and you will have some balck bars? or does it chop the sides off. On a small screen you cant afford to waste space

Xperia S has 342 ppi

But does it actually render things the same way as Apples retina products or will this just mean that everything is tiny and no sharper than normal?

Lol, I love all the Mac-boys all coming at me :p Fact is, I have visual impairment, so I'm going to want the bigger screen and yes I can distinguish 720p.

With a visual impairment everything will be smaller on most other phones despite the larger screen.

What a surprise! :p Pretty much the exact same thing again..........

They will seriously need to do something different with their next iphone, change the design, completely revamp iOS and actually have current gen tech. (no 720P screen, no NFC etc..........the GN has had these 2 things for how long now and it will be the norm for all the new good android phones coming out) otherwise it will definitely start to be the downfall of apple. Many people have jumped from the 4/4s to the GS 3 and have loved it completely and I am pretty sure that they won't be going back to the iphone 5, many more will be jumping to windows 8 phones and android phones until apple actually innovate!

I would agree with some of this, but I doubt they will ever get a 720p screen due to apps and such. I was really hoping for NFC as their is a push for it from WP8 and android now.

Yes it is indeed very very sharp, I dislike apples way of doing things on the phones, it means everything is still rendered in 320p such as webpages and means your losing out on a lot of screen space.

Meanwhile in the Monitors forum:

"A 17" 1280x1024 monitor is better than a 24" 1920x1080 monitor because pixel density."

Since getting a rMBP I actually find myself using it as a primary display over my 24" 19x12. Don't knock it till you try it, it is an amazing step forward. I'd pay crazy money (but not insane) for a 24" display like this.

I would be really interested to know who the "average" iPhone user really is
I think knowing this would justify the design decisions.

Lets face it, few of us here are the average mobile device user.

Not very impressive specs. I'm sure the screen will be nice and all but its not out of this world. I'm sure the OS will be smooth but again, nothing amazing CPU wise.

Lets face it, it's just a iPhone 4 with a bigger screen. I have lots of friends with iPhones, I know they'll all be massively impressed by this and will be upgrading.

Funny thing actually, I was in a team meeting a few weeks ago and people started talking about the new iPhone. I know that there was no official specs out at the time out but all these people started talking about how great the new iPhone was going to be. One guy even mentioned it has a holographic keyboard, another one was talking about its edge to edge LCD display. I piped up and said it probably wont be massively different, just a larger display.

I had a look, it doesn't actually do what Apples retina devices do so it's rather behind unless like you say you want more screen estate.

No there isn't. Google did Google Wallet and have just left it sitting there gathering dust while practically all the carriers in the US have turned their backs on it for their own system which isn't even out yet. Add to that there's virtually no NFC market in America (Apple's core market) - not much to use it with and nobody uses it - it's no wonder Apple aren't going to bother with it yet. As they've shown repeatedly, when it comes to systems/standards that aren't their own, they'll happily wait it out or simply not participate.

I think the screen will be amazing, the 4/4s had a nice screen but it was lacking in color, now it has a Full (Close to) RGB which will be amazing. Apart from that I think the new build is good, gone away with the lame glass on the back.

Last I read google had signed a deal with a lot of companies, and MS will sure push it too. If most phones had it I could see it catching on quickly.

IDK what your talking about here, but it is just as sharp as apples device. my GF has a GN which isnt the best screen out their but I see no real difference between that and my 4s, please could you clear up what you mean by "what apple does" cause it just sounds like your making up stuff.

I'd like to question that phrasing they've used. 2x faster to me suggests that it's 3 times as fast as the original. So if the old one did something in 1.2 seconds, this would have to do it in 0.4. If it does it on 0.8 that's 1x faster.

Either they've made some serious improvements, or that's some cheeky wording. (And me picking holes in it :p )

You've misunderstood. 2x is not 200% when talking about increases, in the same way 1x is not 100% more.

If you a car that can do 30mph and made it 2x faster, that would be 2x30=60mph and in your example, if something took 1.2seconds to do something and you made it 2x faster, then it would take the reciprocal time (in this case 1/2) or 0.6 second.

If you think something is 1x faster ask yourself this. If you were travelling at 60mph and multplied that 1x would 1x60 suddenly equal 120? No.

I just can't believe how the tables have turned to suddenly Apple playing catchup in the field which they shook to hell only 5 years ago.

Just look at what the S3 offers to the i5 and what the S2 offered to the i4s....

This constant 'touch up' and not real advancements that Apple have been doing fir the last few generations is going to thoroughly screw them over.

I wonder how long till people actually realise what they're doing.

What's the difference between

2x as fast and
2x faster
