Just ask anyone who practices ramadam.
I quite like the idea.
I have to say that if I have any kind of stomach problems I stop eating for at least 24 sometimes 48 hours. I don't lose weight but actually feel fitter the following few days.
I'm interested in the theory behind having rest days and cell repair.
Would the two days need to be consecutive?
I suppose this thread would have been a lot better if we had begun by saying that what was meant by diet is 'what you eat', not 'what you eat this week to lose 1kg'
Erm, people who practice Ramadan eat and drink everyday after sunset. They don't go without food for two days.
Yes which was exactly my point about the difficultly about pushing theoretical concepts into real world applications.
The method has theory behind it but there is no real science to say 5:2 is the best way to go is there. Nothing longitudinal at all.
The 'science' behind this seems about as robust as the 'science' behind the five-a-day campaign.
If I binge on kebabs for 5 days and fast for 2
Well if you are eating kebabs you probably need to do a 1:6.

Five a day is just a guide. Its dumbed down 'Eat some bloody fruit you fat b*****d, you need those vitamins and you ain't getting them from your happy meals'
I had this debate with someone the other day... So I can eat 5,000kcals for 5 days and then each 600 a day... Sounds like I'm going to lose weight.
26,200 kcals if I do that... If I stick to a normal typical 2,500kcal diet I'm on 17,500... Yep I'm going to lose weight on the 5:2 diet. Maybe 5:2 as in low carbs:high carbs would work ( kind of carb cycling diet )
