iPhone 5 Detail Today

Such a big fail it sold out in 24 hours!

Apple's history of this is always the same. Their apparent stock issues hit them quite often at launch. IMO I think it's just a game to make it more desirable.

BTW, I can't find anywhere that states the iPhone 5 has sold out.... I can see plenty of sites stating that, due to delivery dates being pushed back, this would indicate that they have sold out but I can't see an official source....

My take on it -

The new phone is boring. It's not innovative and as a concept the iPhone is no longer exciting. That's fine in some ways. I guess you could say that the Volkswagen Golf probably falls into the same category these days as there's only so much refinement they can do.

Problem is, this ain't the motor industry. It's the smartphone industry, and that's an industry that grows faster than almost any other right now. Devices that are barely a year old are considered obsolete and software versions change in a blink of an eye.

I have two friends who are iPhone users. One has bought a Galaxy S3 this week and the other is considering moving to Android. Whilst both of them are exposed to a lot of different tech, and thus might not represent your average iPhone user, it's only a matter of time before Joe Bloggs makes the move too.

Apple products sell out, because apple probably want it that way. They limit initial supply get free press for 'iproduct' has sold out, then slowly release product when needed.

It makes those who want an iproduct want it more, as they think because its sold out it must be great.

Apple are best at free press and marketing, and tech sites lap it up.

How's it a cop out?
If you want dual sim, apple isn't for you.

It's a cop out because you're saying if this feature isn't found then the iPhone isn't for you, if I wanted a 4" screen Apple wasn't for me... until they added it. Think back to the original question, it's not about what it is, it's about what it could have been or yet could be.

One of apples biggest philosphies is one product. That suits most people (not all people)

It is rubbish to claim Apple's philosophy is one product:

iPod: shuffle, nano, touch, classic
iPad: 7" and 10"
MacBook: Air, Pro
Mac: mini, iMac, Pro

So what improvements can they make? seeing as you can't have removable battery, dual sim, 5+" screen etc.

Why can't they have these features? They just tossed most of the existing dock accessories under a bus, they can do whatever they want.

Your point is they should do. Something exciting. My point is, the iPhone was only exciting due to. First to market and now the competition has caught up that's not the case. Also at this point in time, there really is nothing exciting to add to a smart phone.

Yes I personally think they should have been more creative but I was trying to address your question about being surprised that some people were disappointed in the iPhone 5. It's a lack of imagination holding you back here, yes of course Apple has a much harder job than say Microsoft because they're already at the top but I don't think it's unfair for some people to ask where the value is in upgrading as there's little to be gained going from 4 to 5 unless you really must have the extra height.

Even what I would describe as the most innovative smartphone of the current releases. Has that due to wireless charging. Which is a nice touch, but hardly exciting or ground braking.

I hope wireless charging becomes a standard, it's not really something to get excited about as it's a convenience thing but having image stabilisation in the camera? That's at the very least, interesting and so there's a lot of excitement around that stuff even if a lot of it is just hype.

Will we be able to buy these on PAYG? If so, when and how much?

They go on sale on Friday. Apple have sold the initial stock and they're on back order now.

Prices: £529, £599 and £699 for the 16, 32 and 64GB models respectively. Contract prices are up on the networks sites now. Check the actual iPhone thread in the Apple section too.

Well its about what...£4.30 per GB for flash memory....seems like an utter rip off tbh.
Last IU checked it wasn't even the good stuff, one of the very lower classes of speed.

I think the Porsche 911 might be a better example. Top quality and same style throughout its history.

The iPhone 5 apart from LtE has everything in it. Not much else can be added. It's like people want change for the sake of change.

There's very little that ATM can be added to a smart phone, other than incremental speed boasts. .

How about...NFC. You know, it's been out an about for some time now. Adding that would be just about keeping up.

Expandable memory...nope - Price gouging for internal memory instead.

Native 720p capable screen...opps - nope.

Everything? Nope.

Guys just look at what Nokia has packed into the 920 they have used everything they could and tried to make a great camera with industry leading features.
Apple said worlds thinnest phone (lie). and the same camera from the 4s with a more compact lens...
A bigger screen? I am sorry but 4" screens been out for a few years now they are behind again in specs.
The reason apple do this?
so they can release the iphone 6 with nfc wirless charging etc and maybe a updated camera.......same old ....

Anandtech now believes that the SoC is neither an A9 nor A15 but a bit of hybrid ala Qualcomm's S4 range of SoC.

Anandtech

Read that earlier, an interesting find! I'll be keeping an eye on it when people get hands on and can start digging to see what apple have managed to put together with that chip.
