Shot with my Sigma 24-70 F2.8 on my D3100 (Which is up for sale :( )
 
I like the first 2, but the keystoning is a little too strong for me in the last 2.
There is also a fair amount of Chroma banding but most of that can be removed with colour noise reduction in LR.

I put No. 3 through DXO to see how it would come out and removed a bit of the banding.

Thanks. It wasn't actually too far from civilisation. They were taken about 90minutes drive from Edinburgh. It was probably about an hour's hike from Blair Atholl in Perthshire so not too far North really. I was quite surprised at the lack of light pollution there though. It was cloudy most of the time but was lucky to get that break in it. It was the only break and happened to be the part that you could see the milky way through. I only had a chance to shoot a few shots off before it covered up again. I hadn't tried any star photography before but wouldn't mind giving it a blast again with more thought into the composition rather than a mad dash to just get a couple of shots. Shooting from in a forest wasn't exactly ideal for getting any interesting compositions. I think next time I rather get higher up a hill with more of a view.

No worries. They're both single exposures so no fancy blending or HDR or anything. The lighting on the trees was from my small camp fire. That's what give it the orange glow in the first shot. The second was the same although I'd just changed the hue of the orange channel in Lightroom to bring the trees back to green. The first shot was 15 seconds at ISO 2000, 17mm f/2.8 although that was then pushed a stop in Lightroom. The second shot was 30 seconds with the same settings and wasn't pushed at all in post. I had to actually pull the highlight details down in the second shot.

I'd have liked more time to play with different settings to get something a bit better but there wasn't much time before it was obscured again. I think if I was trying it again then I'd probably boost the ISO slightly in favour of a quicker shutter speed to prevent any movement showing in the stars. I'd kill for a 24mm f/1.4 for that kind of shot though. One can but dream. :D

Thanks, the watermark still isn't anywhere near ideal as its just bold garbage text but I'm still gonna get a transparent one in the next few weeks to make it FAR less invasive than it is at the moment. I've got another 20 odd very similar photos of the birds but haven't uploaded them just to avoid over saturating my flickr account lol.
